Did you know ice build-up on aircraft wings can dramatically change airflow?❄️🧊✈️ When ice forms, smooth (laminar) airflow may turn turbulent, increasing drag and reducing efficiency. 🎓 In his PhD project, Michele Picciolo uses wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations to investigate laminar-turbulent transition when ice is present. By studying the rough surface created by ice🧊〰 ❄️, the goal is to improve predictions and design safer, more efficient aircraft. 🤝 In collaboration with ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab, Technische Universität Braunschweig, and Dassault Aviation, this research aims to make flying greener and more reliable, even in icy conditions. #TRACES_DNJD #MSCA #DNJD EU Science, Research and Innovation #science4all #ScienceCommunication #3MT

MobileNet - Mobile & Aerospace Networks Lab is also present this year at the 14th EASN - European Aeronautics Science Network! 🚀✈️ held from October 8th to 11th, 2024 in Thessaloniki, Greece. Our colleague Pablo Vera Soto is presenting our poster (Id: 14) "Deployment of a testbed for validation of TSN networks in avionics", developed in collaboration with AERTEC in the framework of the #HECATE project. Do not miss it! Abstract: Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) in avionics is a developing area that seeks to leverage #TSN capabilities to enhance real-time communication and interoperability in aerospace systems. Hence, this research outlines the deployment of a testbed aimed at validating Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) in #avionics, ensuring that TSN meets the stringent timing and latency requirements of avionics applications. By providing a comprehensive platform for testing and validation, the testbed will contribute to the advancement of TSN technology in aerospace applications, ultimately enhancing the safety and efficiency of aircraft operations. @Laura Castro, Pablo Vera Soto, Sergio Fortes, Vicente Escaño Granados, Rafael Ortiz, Raquel Barco. Via zero-shot deep learning, DeepGeo provides an appealing parameterization approach to finding innovative aerodynamic designs by delivering high degrees of freedom while maintaining global geometric validity!
We are excited to share our latest research, "DeepGeo: Deep Geometric Mapping for Automated and Effective Parameterization in Aerodynamic Shape Optimization," which will be presented at the prestigious AIAA AVIATION Forum 2024. Our team, consisting of researchers from EPFL, 香港科技大学, A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research, and ISAE-SUPAERO, has developed DeepGeo, a novel neural-network-based method that automates the complex geometry processing in aerodynamic shape optimization. 💡 Key Highlights: - Fully automatic parameterization for complex geometries - Integration with volumetric CFD mesh deformation - Supports large deformations while ensuring global smoothness - Requires no training data We have validated DeepGeo with multiple case studies, including 2D circle-to-airfoil, 3D CRM wing, and Blended-Wing-Body aircraft optimizations, demonstrating its effectiveness and tuning-free capability. Check out our demonstration video to see DeepGeo in action and learn more about our model https://lnkd.in/ddr86Aut. 🛩️Excited to announce the publication of my last article in Aerospace Science and Technology. Delving into a portion of my doctoral research, we explored the impact on the maneuvering performance of a tiltrotor through the aeroelastic code we developed, DUST-MBDyn. Considering various levels of aeroservoelastic modeling, the study sheds light on crucial aspects of tiltrotor dynamics. The coupled solver shows the capability to determine the trim conditions in airplane mode and predicts steady and periodic trim loads. Transient analyses are presented as well, considering a roll maneuver and highlighting the importance of the accurate representation of rotary wing aerodynamics provided by the vortex particle method for load evaluation and vibrational assessment.
Are you interested in simulating an aeroservoelastic model of a complex aircraft like a tiltrotor? Check out the new paper by Alberto Savino, Ph.D., co-authored by Alessandro Cocco and Vincenzo Muscarello. 👉 Link to the paper https://lnkd.in/dYrp_x4B #DAER #AerospacePoliMi Politecnico di Milano
