"I always tell people that, as a managing director, you're wearing three hats. One is the hat of the shareholders. One is the hat of the business, the staff and the people. And the other is the hat of self-interest. It's very easy at moments like that to wear the wrong hat. It was evident at this moment self-interest wasn't the thing to focus on because the step up in the benefits to the shareholders was so significant." For my recent corporate history book (see the link below), an ASX-listed business commissioned me to update and expand its story into the 21st century. For the project, I undertook lengthy interviews with more than 20 people including many former and current CEOs, board members, executives and employees involved with the business over the past 40 years. These interviews provided a wealth of information and stories about where the company had been, what it had got right, and even what it had got wrong. Talking to them revealed the hidden pressures and personal struggles faced by those charged with leading organisations, especially in challenging circumstances. Their experiences provided perspectives beyond those gleaned from regular research material like archival company documents and newspaper reports. Dates and milestones provide the skeleton structure for writing the story of an organisation's history. But the flesh and blood come from talking to the people who were there. That's when stories take flight, and you get real insight into what makes an organisation tick, what's in its DNA. If you're interested in preserving your organisation's history and want its story told, please get in touch with me to discuss how I might be able to help. Your organisation's history doesn't have to be as extensive as a 55,000-word hardcover book. It could be a series of articles for your website or a commemorative magazine-style production. I'm happy to chat about what best suits your organisation.

An ASX-listed business commissioned me some time ago to update and expand upon its rich history. The result was a 55,000-word book that included in-depth interviews with former and current chairs, CEOs and employees and extensive archival research. The book was recently published by Allen & Unwin. Understanding your organisation's history can provide valuable lessons and insights into its past, present and future. Documenting an organisation's achievements and challenges, as well as its people and stories, can also give employees and stakeholders a richer sense of its ethos and purpose. Such an exercise does not have to take the form of a book. It could be a series of articles, additional website pages, or social media posts. If you value your organisation's history and believe it is worth recording, contact me to discuss what might work best for you and your organisation.

Do you value your organisation's history? Or is it an afterthought relegated to some perfunctory paragraphs on a forgotten page of your website? The truth is that not all organisations have that much to say about their history. Many organisations were established some years ago, did stuff for a few years, and now they're doing either the same or slightly different stuff. End of story. And that's OK. But what if your organisation is not like most others? What if it has great stories to tell? Has it made significant contributions to its sector, community, industry or society? Has it achieved truly magnificent things against the odds? Does it stand tall among its peers as a beacon to all others? Does it have an epic story to tell? If it does, maybe I can help. Telling the story of your organisation's history is more than a vanity project. Understanding its history can provide valuable lessons and insights into its past, present and future. Documenting an organisation's achievements and challenges, as well as its people and stories, can also give employees and stakeholders a richer sense of your organisation's ethos and purpose. I recently completed a corporate history project for an ASX-listed business, resulting in a 55,000-word hardcover book published by Allen & Unwin. I learnt many things along the way about the company, its people, and the long and winding road it travelled to success over its 175+ years. The company's CEO commissioned me to update and expand its story because it had faced momentous challenges over the years. He wanted to let his people know they could be proud of their business and its mission. He wanted his employees to know where the business had been and where it could still go. Such an exercise does not have to be a book. It could be a series of articles, dedicated website pages, podcasts, or even social media posts. The format is not what's important. What's important is that your organisation's proud story is told. If you value your organisation's history and believe it is worth more than a few slapdash lines on a website, contact me to discuss how I can help tell your story. The other thing is that we are delighted to formally introduce our new Mother Nature and Future Generations Director Brontie Maria Ansell from Lawyers for Nature to our key stakeholders today 🙌 🌱 Starting with our supplier partners. As a product manufacturing business, most of our social and environmental impact is in our supply chain. It's vital our partners understand the new directorship and how the process will shift the way we work together. 🌱 Next, our team. Brontie is already a household name around the business(!). Today she will lay out the directorship and how we'll be led by the question 'What would Nature and Future Generations say?' in all business decision making from now on. 🌱 Then, the wider business community. In the UK, 99% of private sector business are SME's. We're one of them feeling the acute urgency for change. We want to share everything we do with others in the hope something might resonate for their own business and our power as an SME collective speeds up progress. For the B2B session, Brontie will be joined by Simeon Rose, Anne Hopkins from Faith In Nature and renegade scientist Phoebe Tickell from 3-5pm at our showroom in Hackney (handful of tickets still available, link in the comments). 🌱 Lastly, customers and citizens. We feel incredibly lucky to be joined this evening by Daze Aghaji FRSA, Kalpana Arias, Phoebe Tickell, Brontie and Simeon from Faith In Nature to explore the #rightsofnature movement and the potential for joining this wave of change (this one's sold out, will be live streamed over on IG from 6.30 - 8pm). Thanks to everyone for supporting House of Hackney to put this new legal governance tool in place. The first board meeting with our new Nature & Future Generations director is coming soon, we'll keep you posted on our progress 💚 #regeneration #restoration #sustainability #regenerativebusiness #nature

I had a wonderful time at the Business & Beyond conference in Melbourne with Nadia Neocli. Here are some key takeaways from this inspiring event: - Joseph McCleddon III delivered several powerful messages, one being that will power and motivation is temporary - CHANGE in how you think is the answer. - John Lee spoke at length about AI and how it has become an indispensable tool for business. I found this topic very interesting and immediately thought of ways in which I could implement AI into my business, CoTheory. Automating tasks like recording meeting minutes and creating project workflows are just the tip of the iceberg, and I have since set a goal to research and invest in AI capabilities within the next 6-12 months. - Roxy Jacenko’s philosophy on building relationships resonated with me, as well as her comments about the difference between being transparent and emotional and to always have seeing eyes when it comes to trends in the market, aka “the next big thing”. - JT Foxx enlightened me with the concept of ‘non-refundable minutes’ and reminded me that there are no shortcuts to success, in fact, he specifically mentioned that any one of us is one phone call or email away from a business changing moment and building that relationship from the very beginning is the most important thing that matters. - I enjoyed Mark Bouris giving us an insight into the fundamentals of his course “Playbook for Success” and his view on building your business to the highest level - as if it’s up for sale. I am enthusiastic about participating in upcoming Success Resources events to acquire additional insights from seasoned entrepreneurs and innovators. This is particularly valuable in the initial stages of my business venture, where I am eager to absorb new knowledge and apply innovative concepts within CoTheory.
