Katie Rae of Engine Ventures joined Alan Neuhauser of Axios Climate on stage yesterday in #Boston at the MIT Energy Conference. Some key takeaways: (1) What's changing now in deep tech? "Companies that were invested in on this 10-year timeframe are coming to market. We are seeing the physicality of what is happening. Not just three companies — it's five, it's 10." To see this in action, check out footage from Katie's recent trip to #Brazil to inaugurate Boston Metal do Brasil: https://lnkd.in/g--2fSPh (2) Education & storytelling are key. It’s important to have people, especially elected officials, understand #climatetechnology. The future is actually exciting and we need more people to help work on real solutions. (3) We’re in an election year. Katie Rae’s advice for startups? “Take a step back. Focus on your core business. Do I think it will be slightly more difficult in Q3 to raise capital? Yes. We’re going to have a lot of distractions. But it’s steady as you go, stay the course, get meaningful stuff done.” Share any questions you have for Katie in the comments.

What’s the state of VC dealmaking in #Germany? Talking to Sifted’s Anne Sraders about it, our GP Anton Waitz states that he begins to see signs of recovery. “I definitely think there's more activity than in the previous months. We witness a steady deal flow in the pre-seed and seed stages, where our focus lies. German entrepreneurs in the #climate and #defence spaces are particularly busy at the moment. We are also seeing some notable Series A and B rounds which gives confidence to us early stage investors that there will be follow-on funding available for their better-performing companies down the line.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eJVYd-aE

A quick bit of morning trivia 👇 : Do you know who Thomas Elva Edison is 💭 ? Of course, most of you will get it right and say he was the one who invented 'Electric Bulbs' 💡 . Well, yes, that's right. But he invented something else too, which is the most talked-about buzz word in startup ecosystem,i.e., 'Venture Capitalism' 💸 How? So, in 1878, when he was doing his experiments with light bulbs, he convinced wealthy investors, especially bankers 🏦 , including J.P. Morgan and associates, to finance his experiments. In return for a share in any patents. This marked the first time seed funding was provided for an early-stage invention that was still on the drawing board. This is how Edison needs to be credited for yet another invention, not in the science field but in business. #LinkedIn #Thoughts #VC #History LinkedIn LinkedIn Learning

🤝Dörte’s clear preference : Hard tech climate startups with a strong team dynamic Please read our latest blog post, an interview with our General Partner Doerte Hirschberg. Dörte emphasises that we need to embrace hardware and deep-tech solutions to really transform high-emitting industries and significantly reduce and even eliminate emissions, but they are hard to scale. “Few VCs bring together the knowledge and courage to support HardTech founders, so they remain underfunded. Malin, Morten, Stefan and I happen to have the expertise needed and so we chose to fill this gap and launched an Article 9 fund.” she remarks. According to her, the HardTech solutions in their portfolio are solving real industry problems and therefore will create value in almost all scenarios, while macro trends hold the promise of outsized returns, thereby making HardTech perfect for Climentum’s dual carry model. Dörte plays a pivotal role in selecting the teams that we back. She insists on meeting the core team in person and seeing it interact because it’s close to meaningless if the dynamics in the founding team don’t work. Years in HR help her cut through the noise and identify the founders with potential. With her background in scaling startups at Rocket Internet and her grasp on the engineering side of things, she is always ready to go above and beyond for our portfolio, staying true to her Climentum DNA. Reach out to Dörte if you are solving a Climate Tech problem! #HardTech #ClimateTech #Article9 #FemaleGP Malin Carlstrom, Stefan Maard, Morten Halborg
