I'm realizing I will eventually need to do consulting. My unofficial research (talking to folks, reviewing the literature, lived experience) is showing me that we're missing the mark when it comes to supervisors in local public health orgs in the US. A supervisor can make or break a staff person's entire work experience. What is said (or not said) can cause serious harm and stunt the growth of staff. How are supervisors being equipped to provide leadership, to mentor staff, and to provide a psychologically safe environment for a workforce charged with solving some of the country's most difficult social justice issues? Workplace violence is something that has been talked about for the past several years. Workplace violence in healthcare is either something that is being talked about more or it’s worsening OR both. Tangible steps to curb workplace violence is key, but the bigger key is supporting our healthcare providers when it happens to them. Action must be more than a card to EAP. Laws to make healthcare violence a felony is a start, but the institution standing behind their staff and in some cases taking the lead is how this needs to happen. Speak up and share your comments during this public comment period.
