A month ago today I came back from Madeira refereeing in the VII Torneio Internacional. I was kindly invited by Gordon McCabe to answer a few questions about the experience. ** Jake Tyrrell interview ** Over the summer 3 our referees travelled to Madeira to officiate at the Funchal Futsal Cup, we caught up with Glasgow Referees Association member Jake Tyrrell to find out about his experience: 1. Your just back from the “Funchal Futsal Cup” in Madeira, tell us a bit about it? Wow, what an experience. I don’t think you can put it into words how much it’s improved me both personally and professionally. As the teams were predominately Portuguese with some other countries involved, your signalling is the most important thing. To referee in front of 300 fans with referees from other countries is an excellent experience and something I’m incredibly grateful for. I’ve made great connections, friends and am hoping to go back next year. I refereed my first final, FC Picasso vs GDCE Modelos in front of a packed stadium, the intensity and passion from both sets of players and benches was incredible. 2.. What interested you in taking part in the competition? I’m always keen to go and learn new skills. I watch and referee a lot of futsal, I’m always the first one to put my hand up for anything so I thought it was something I couldn’t turn down. With Portugal being the current world champions I knew the standard would be excellent, with intense games and a great backing from locals. I wasn’t disappointed. 3. What did you take away from the tournament? Other than I needed to get back to the gym haha, I learned more finer details that I’ve transferred back to my regional league. Receiving feedback from 2 great observers - Martina FIFA referee and Steve was beneficial to my development. Myself and Ryan (Scottish Futsal Referee) ended up being 2 of 5 refs appointed as Referee 1 for the finals which was a brilliant and enjoyable experience. Teaming with officials from different countries for the finals (Switzerland and Portugal) has improved my communication massively. 4.What would your advice be to anyone thinking about getting involved in future? Do it, the experience is something that’ll help you improve and consolidate your refereeing. It’s a great development opportunity and you’ll be made to feel welcome from everyone. 5. What are your aims and ambitions for the coming season? I’m always looking to push myself so hoping to get closer to Category 1 if not achieving it this season. I got to the last 16 of the Scottish Cup last season so looking to hopefully progress further. I’m planning on going to the different venues to observe my colleagues and see how I can further improve.
