A LIFETIME CREATING BRANDS - AND WRITING ABOUT THEM. Find me on david@tswns.net

IS THIS INNOVATION? Every so often there is loud hosanna of self congratulation from a corporate department proclaiming the launch of a new innovation. And then you get Smirnoff Mango & Passion Fruit Twist. But is that really an innovation? To me it's something you'd knock off on a Friday afternoon, after lunch. And it would be as cheap as chips to produce. But innovation it definitely isn't. I wonder how much it cost to bring that to market? Here's a list of some ideas that appear in my book. I'd be interested to canvass opinion on which can be classed as innovation and which not. And why. And if there are other brands out there that people regard as genuinely innovative, let me know. I think agreeing on a definition of innovation is important. BUFFALO JUMP : A Canadian whisky positioned to compete with Bourbon brands. It was described as 'Mellow-Mash', versus the traditional 'Sour-Mash'. CARIGNAC : This was an attempt to establish Bordeaux, with its fine wine reputation, as an alternative prestige brandy region to Cognac. J&B SUB-ZERO : The first whisky specially blended to be served straight from the freezer and consumed frozen. SHERIDAN'S : A unique two-stage pack that delivers coffee cream liqueur that blends the coffee and cream before serving.. STERLING RED CHARDONNAY : A wine that exploited the legal requirement that for wines to be designated Chardonnay, they were required to contain 75% of that grape. The other 25% was a RED wine. CIROC : A vodka made from grapes, not grain or potato. TANQUERAY TEN : A gin aimed at vodka drinkers via its fresh, fruity taste. It avoids the harsh juniper 'hit' generically associated with gin. It was in the top 3 best sellers (for flavoured vodka) inside 6 months from launch in March 2022. More of a line extension than new innovative product.

Not innovation, a range extension. Dull.
