LGBTI PEOPLE IN SPORTS: "GOVERNING BODIES MUST RESPECT THE RIGHT OF LGBTI PEOPLE TO PARTICIPATE" During the 56th United Nations Human Rights Council, we highlighted how "many schools, sports governing bodies, and governments are prohibiting trans, gender-diverse, and intersex people from playing in categories based on their gender identity and/or sex characteristics; and subjecting them and other women and girls to invasive practices which may amount to torture or cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment." "The bodily integrity and autonomy of all women and girls engaging in sports needs to be safeguarded", we reiterated. ‘Disability is NOT inability’ The past 4 years of research and innovation with partners in Malawi and now Southern Africa is calling for more space for ownership and leadership of disability sport narratives by African media and creators, specifically with lived disability experience. #BeyondThisLand was a pilot, a first test to see how audiences engage digitally and how processes could be harnessed for change. As a supporter and ally in the formation of the campaign, it was impossible to unsee the systemic inequities and deeply rooted discrimination that challenge power, voice and investment and imped progress in African disability sport development. Watch the video, read the article below. What potential for change do you see for LA2028? Video description: The video opens with stunning travel imagery from across Africa, showcasing landscapes and wildlife. Gradually, subtle action shots of African Paralympic athletes are interwoven. As the music and poetry intensify, the pace of the visuals quickens showing grit, determination and celebration. The video closes by revisiting the travel scenes and climaxes with the words 'Beyond This Land' in bold white letters, filling the screen.
The #BeyondThisLand digital campaign is making changes to the story of disability sports in Africa. Find out more https://lnkd.in/dh_4ANwX via Global Disability Innovation Hub

Today we've launched a new report: Braving the Backlash: How Sports Brands Can Take a Stand on Social. 2024 promises to be another huge year for sport. But alongside the huge amount of joy that sport brings, there is also a darker side to major sporting events - a surge in online hate. Research by our Cultural Insights team found that there is a high likelihood of an increase in hate speech online around two topics: racism during the Euros, and discrimination on the grounds of gender & sexual identity during the Paris Olympics and Paralympics. The report outlines a comprehensive step-by-step approach for brands to tackle hate speech online. You can download it for free here, and if you'd like to discuss any of the issues or guidance in the report, please get in touch.

As we celebrate the beauty of sports, let's also celebrate the profound impact of inclusion in creating diverse and welcoming environments. Inclusive sports environments offer more than just physical activity; they foster social skills, communication, and teamwork while instilling values of empathy, respect, and understanding among players, coaches, and spectators alike. Today, let's spotlight the importance of inclusion in sports for individuals with autism. Autism doesn't limit passion or talent; it's a unique trait that adds diversity and richness to our sporting communities. By fostering inclusive spaces, we create opportunities for individuals with autism to showcase their skills, build confidence, and form lasting connections. Let's embrace diverse abilities, encourage acceptance, and ensure that everyone has the chance to thrive in the sports they love. Together, we can break barriers, champion inclusivity, and create a world where every individual, regardless of their differences, feels welcomed and valued in the realm of sports. 🌟 #InclusiveSports #AutismInclusion #DiversityInSports #UnityInSports #SportsForAll #EmbraceDifferences

Is Taiwan An Inclusive Society for Its Disabled Population? No. Here's Why. #Taiwan is seen as a champion of human rights in Asia. Organizations tout accessibility/inclusivity at events, but they do not focus on the people they claim to be including. Why aren’t disabled voices included in Taiwan? Why aren’t we consulted when things are being built or changes are being made? Accessibility and inclusivity are simply buzz words in Taiwan right now. They bounce around on social platforms and have little to no meaning to most people using them. Persons with disabilities do not have a seat at the table. This article highlights the numerous problems we face each and every day. These problems are also highlighted in human rights reports, but remain unaddressed by the government. (Citations included for fact-checking.) I've taken the liberty of taking the stats disclosed in these reports and popping them into an easy to read infographic, but you can read more in my article at: https://lnkd.in/gS5tTqFp #DisabilityRights #DisabilityInclusion #LifeInTaiwan #DisabilityAwareness
