📢 Today Bond UK has published our first review of UK civic space 📢 I've written an opinion piece for Byline Times that looks at the big trends shaping civic space in the UK outlined in the report and calls on the new government to reverse the decline we have seen over the last decade. We know that authoritarianism is increasing globally, but in the UK, a tendency towards 'British exceptionalism' has led us to believe that we are immune. That is not the case. Last year, CIVICUS downgraded civic space in the UK to 'obstructed', which puts us in the same category as Hungary. Our report shows that this downward trajectory has continued over the last 18 months. Ever stricter anti-protest laws, longer sentences for protesters blocked from mentioning their motives in court, tone-policing of charity campaigns, and the vetting and banning of experts from policy making are some of the trends we have identified. The new Government will have many priorities, but repairing our civic space and creating an enabling environment for the whole of civil society must be among them. It is integral to the functioning of our democracy and will (hopefully) set a positive example internationally. https://lnkd.in/eiPFekAp
