Thanks to Plastics NZ’s ‘CircularConnect’ programme, we got to work with two great teams at Flo & Frankie and Advanced Textiles Association. Some of the composite plastic waste streams from advanced textiles companies are difficult (or even impossible) to recycle - so we provided our client, Duncan's Canvas, with a template to create plastics collection bag for F&F to collect their soft plastics in. At F&F, soft plastics are sorted as they go (thanks to Environmental Innovation Centre workshops and our signage) and then taken to PACT Recycling (using reverse logistics as the F&F van goes past the door once a week anyway). We spoke to Astron to ensure that the new reusable bag comes back to F&F every time. The F&F team are testing the design for us, and we will continue to improve it and determine how many times it can be reused but they are super tough so hopefully for many years. Perhaps a future market for the ATA NZ too ? So reusing waste from textiles to create bags to carry recyclable plastics for another company was a very happy solution! #Sustainability #EnvironmentalInnovationCentre #PlasticRecycling #EIC

CIWM WEBINAR | As the waste and resources sector pushes for better policy implementation and legislation guidance aimed at efficient product design, producer responsibility, correct disposal, and circular solutions, there's a lot we can learn from what’s already in place for specific products and materials. In this webinar, we'll be joined by John Twitchen of Stuff4Life Ltd, Alan Wheeler, CEO of the Textile Recycling Association, and James Rigg of Trojan Electronics Group to explore: 📍 The current policy landscape for WEEE products - what’s working, what’s not, and what needs to change. 📍 The next steps for WEEE producer responsibility as we look to manage hazards and impact. 📍 Producer responsibility for textiles - should this already exist and what would it look like? 📍 Should overarching principles be applied to all materials to incentivise repair and reuse? 🔜 Moulded fibre products are ready to take over plastics in packaging The latest draft of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) promises a dynamic expansion in the market for moulded fibre packaging, as Christoffer Lindfors and Christoph Euringer from AFRY Management Consulting state in their latest article. Moulded fibre offers a reduced carbon footprint compared to plastics, can be recycled within existing waste streams, and stands as a sustainable substitute for numerous conventional plastic products. However, challenges remain in the form of potential legislative changes and technical issues. Innovations are required to make moulded fibre products that comply with upcoming regulations. It's not just a matter of meeting legal requirements but also responding to the sustainability call from major brands like: – Subway, – McDonald's’s and – Burger King. With the PPWR coming into effect in 2030, companies need to start choosing partners for scaling up production quickly and innovatively. However, to reach its potential and the forecasted market size of 1.5 Mt by 2030, it has to outshine other fibre-based packaging solutions. Berry Investment will help make front of store soft plastic recycling a reality Berry Global’s recycling business in the UK has recently invested in upgrading its advanced used plastic packaging recycling complex in Heanor, Derbyshire. The recycling facility is able to recycle a wide variety of flexible - or ‘soft’ - plastic waste, including retail packaging such as carrier bags, bread bags, film wrapping, and plastic pouches. This type of plastic is currently being collected via front of store bins at leading supermarkets, but capacity is expected to rise substantially in March 2027, when kerbside collection of flexible plastic packaging for recycling will become mandatory in England. The Berry investment comes at a time when these supermarket front of store soft plastic collection schemes are coming under increasing scrutiny. A recent investigation by Everyday Plastic and the Environmental Investigation Agency found that around seventy per cent of the https://lnkd.in/ewaJ8qav #Sustainability

Spotted this today - a package claiming to be "100% recyclable" with a resin code 4 (LDPE). While this is technically true in New Zealand where soft plastic recycling is available, the same package is sold across Australian supermarkets where there's currently no soft plastic collection scheme. This highlights a crucial consideration in packaging design: recycling claims must reflect the reality of waste infrastructure in ALL your markets. Quick tips for brands operating across ANZ: • Use market-specific labelling ie. Australasian Recycling Labels (ARL) • Clearly qualify recycling instructions by region • Consider your responsibility to educate consumers about proper disposal As packaging designers, we play a vital role in preventing greenwashing through clear, accurate disposal information. Let's design for both environmental impact AND consumer transparency. What are your thoughts on regional variations in recycling claims? #PackagingDesign #Sustainability #ConsumerTransparency #CircularEconomy #PackagingInnovation #ANZBusiness

This is a timely webinar which is being organised by the CIWM and I welcome the opportunity to contribute. The current economic crisis that is being felt throughout the used clothing and textile recycling industry highlights that we can no longer afford to delay the implementation of #epr for our sector. Much of the sector is on the brink of financial ruin due to a number of factors coming to a head at the same time on the global markets. With an extended producer responsibility scheme in place for clothing and textiles, we can start to put our sector on a firmer financial footing and secure its long term viable. We need help from Government now. #textilerecycling #secondhand #sustainablefashion #circulareconomy

Our five hardest-to-recycle items - and what to do with them. It is not always clear if something can be recycled. Ged Cann looks at five of the hardest-to-recycle items, and what to do with them. Chilltainers - the packaging used to keep food cold when it is delivered - are ending up in landfills, despite the claim they are 95 to 97 per cent recyclable. Wellington City Council does not recycle them because, like most of the country, it cannot recycle mixed materials, such as Chilltainers, because it is too difficult to separate the layers. So, any of the popular thermal packaging units that turn up at its recycling plant are sent to landfill. Ged Cann 16:11, Apr 14 2017. Chilled To The Max has solved the problem of recyclability. Stronger, cheaper, printable, more thermally efficient, can be produced to any configuration and accredited to ISO14021 as 100% recyclable. Get in touch. At Pack Tech, we're committed to supporting the growing market for sustainable products made from recycled plastics. Our products are manufactured using Polypropylene (PP) and High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), two highly recyclable materials that offer numerous benefits, including flexibility, weather resistance, and chemical durability. Both PP and HDPE are easily processed and have been recognised by the New Zealand Government for their recyclability, alongside PET (recycling codes 1, 2, and 5). Efforts are already underway, in collaboration with local councils, to improve kerbside recycling systems for these materials. From 2022 to 2025, we will see the gradual removal of hard-to-recycle plastics like PVC, polystyrene, and certain degradable plastics. This includes single-use items such as drink stirrers, cotton buds, and plastic cutlery. The future of packaging is recyclable, sustainable, and innovative, and we're proud to be part of the solution. #foodandbeverageindustry #manufacturing #sustainability #foodmanufacturing #NZBusiness #foodtechnology #PackTech #plasticsindustry #packagingindustry #foodpackaging #packaging

4moA very important part of reducing plastics in our environment. Plastics has become a big problem on land and in our ocean, just thinking about the layer of plastic soup on our beautiful ocean makes this such an important initiative. Thank you Environmental Innovation Centre for the research and work that you do to tackle such a huge issue in our environment
