We are delighted to be able to finally confirm that the Textile Recycling Association is one of partners that will help to deliver a £4 million project to develop and pilot a pioneering fully-integrated, automated sorting and pre-processing plant for waste textiles, which could eventually divert thousands of tonnes from the waste stream each year. The Autosort for Circular Textiles Demonstrator (ACT UK) is a two-year project that will support the transition from uneconomic manual sorting of clothes and textiles that are not suitable for resale to highly-automated sorting and pre-processing, which can then be used as feedstock for existing and emerging recycling processes. The project is being supported by funding from the Circular Fashion Programme supported by Innovate UK, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), all part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The lead organisation is UKFT Association with close involvement from Circle-8 Textile Ecosystems. As well as the Textile Recycling Association the other partners that will help to deliver this project are IBM, Marks and Spencer, Tesco, PANGAIA, New Look, Reskinned, Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL), Oxfam Wastesavers, Textile Recycling International Limited, Shred Station Ltd, Worn Again Technologies, English Fine Cottons, ALEX-BEGG AND COMPANY, Camira, Manufacturing Technology Centre, University of Leeds, The University of Huddersfield and WRAP. GLOBAL TEXTILE FIBRE PRODUCTION HITS RECORD HIGH OF 124 MILLION TONNES IN 2023: New figures from Textile Exchange show global fibre output increased by 7 per cent in 2023 on the previous year. Fibre consumption continues to grow across sectors like apparel, home textiles, and footwear. Virgin fossil-based synthetics saw a rise in market share, increasing from 67m tonnes in 2022 to 75m tonnes in 2023. Cotton and recycled fibres, meanwhile, faced a decline in market share. Polyester remains the dominant fibre, representing 57 per cent of total global fibre production. Projections show fibre production could reach 160 million tonnes by 2030 if current trends continue. Global fibre production has now more than doubled since 2000 despite the rise of sustainability efforts and initiatives in fashion since that time. The figures were announced during New York Climate Week which - ironically - has a large presence from the global fashion industry. Thank you Brett Mathews for sharing this. While in principal this is a fantastic idea, I fear it does not go far enough to limit the environmental impact caused by the textile industry as a whole. I must confess I have read this quickly (will read thoroughly later) but my understanding of ESPR is that "The ESPR includes a ban on the destruction of unsold textile goods as well as annual reporting of unsold goods. Therefore, brands must support this requirement by making data available relating to textile waste in their supply chain" only applies to pre consumer textiles. This needs to be adopted for all textiles in order to tackle the true impact of textile waste. As someone who represents the Textile Recycling Association and it's members in the UK, I am concerned that if the current crisis in the used industry continues then charities and local authorities will look at landfill / incineration as viable options for disposal of material that they can't sell for reuse.
IS FASHION READY FOR THE EU’S BAN ON THE DESTRUCTION OF UNSOLD GOODS? The EU’s Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) will see a ban on the destruction of unsold goods - and fashion brands have until July 2025 to adapt. In this article written exclusively for Apparel Insider, Debbie Shakespeare, senior director of sustainability with Avery Dennison, says better inventory management and demand forecasting will be key to meeting new requirements. She suggests fashion brands need to collaborate with suppliers and invest in technologies such as RFID tracking, AI, and 'digital twins' to minimise waste and improve accuracy. The ESPR also mandates Digital Product Passports (DPPs), which will enable transparency and traceability across product lifecycles. Practices such as resale and take-back programmes are expected to increase - in theory reducing the need for unsold stock destruction. For large companies, the clock is ticking. Complying with these regulations not only avoids penalties but also positions brands as leaders in sustainable fashion. Shakespeare says fashion retailers should embrace change, adopt circularity, and prepare for a future where sustainability isn’t just an option - it’s the law.
