Note to all, the Bus Offices are going to be closed today in solidarity and observance of Indigenous People's Day, as opposed to celebrating Columbus Day (which celebrates a not-so-awesome colonizer.) Fun fact—we're living on stolen, unceded land. At the Bus, it is our duty to educate young voters of history and political context that the land we organize on holds. We acknowledge that the land we are on belongs to the Coast Salish peoples here in King County, along with other tribes across the state where we organize, which includes (but is not limited to) the Yakima, Colville, Spokane, Quinault, Tulalip, Puyallup, and countless more tribes. Both the State of Washington and the US government have been complacent in and responsible for the genocide, ethnic cleansing, and forced removal of these tribes as a means to acquire land. Despite centuries of colonial theft and violence, Washington State is still Indigenous land and will always be Indigenous land. Indigenous people are not relics of the past. They are still here, and continue to demonstrate their gifts and resilience amidst a mess of ongoing colonialism and oppression. As important as it is to acknowledge the stolen land we organize on, land acknowledgements like these are purely ceremonial and hold no legal weight. Which is why it is more important than ever that young people organize toward a future that upholds Indigenous Sovereignty and rejects colonialism and oppression. Gratitude is the task of today and every day. As we gather and honor each other, let’s remember the land we live upon. Giving it and the indigenous tribes beforehand gratitude and acknowledgement. Through a practice with #DesignScienceStudio , I’ve witnessed minds across the world acknowledging the territory of others as we gather online. Today, I want to share those resources for you to do the same. 1. #NativeLandDigital from @nativelandnet gives you the ability to see what land you live upon and resources to research the tribes further. 2. Territory Acknowledgment (example in video) and definition:Territory acknowledgement is a way that people insert an awareness of Indigenous presence and land rights in everyday life. 3. Merry Christmas? It’s supposed to be magical isn’t it. It’s supposed to be like the Marks and Spencer and John Lewis adverts. Christmas morning spent with loved ones in matching reindeer pyjamas and a host of exciting new toys to play with, ready to indulge in the Christmas dinner ahead. For some children and families, Christmas can be a truly miserable time. Unrealistic expectations and financial woes coupled with unrelenting messages of being a good cheer can build resentment, a sense of inadequacy and hopelessness. In England, relative and absolute poverty continues to grow in the grip of the cost of living crisis. 31% of children live in poverty (Joseph Rowntree Foundation) that’s 4.2 million children or around 8 children living in poverty in every average classroom. 131,000 children are homeless in England (Shelter). Let that sink in. That is around 40,000 more than a full Wembley stadium, all without secure and stable accommodation, living amidst uncertainty.
