Helping you become a better OT who loves what you do! | Proud #OTNerd 🤓 | 2024 Finalist - OT of the Year | Open to questions and collaborations to help OTs Learn, Grow and Excel! | Owner of Your OT Tutor
This week is National Palliative Care Week. There have been lots of promotional posts visible on social media – which is great – but two words in this one stuck out to me, and probably lots of other OTs. “Team” and “Purpose.” Occupational therapists are an integral part of any palliative care team. Our ability to adapt everyday tasks through modifying the task itself, or changing the environment through prescribing assistive technology, can make a significant difference in the lives of people receiving palliative care. That “significant difference” is the second key word that jumped out at me – “Purpose.” Our client-centred, holistic approach guides us to seek to understand what activities and roles are meaningful in a person’s life, so that we can use our skills to find ways to facilitate their participation in activities that give them purpose. It’s not just for those final days – OTs, and many other members of the palliative care team can make such a difference to the lives of people with a life-limiting illness at any stage. Please share to spread awareness this week, but then jump to the comments to find out about some resources that can also help you do more than spread awareness. P.S. For access to a Your OT Tutor Journal Club session recording on prescribing AT for people receiving end-of-life care, check out the link in the comments. #OccupationalTherapy #MattersofLifeAndDeath #NPCW2024 #YourOTTutor

𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗢𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 High injury rates in nursing homes contribute to staggering turnover rates, with 𝟯𝟴% of staff planning to leave within two years. This turnover intensifies workloads for remaining staff, leading to more injuries and a decline in care quality for residents. To stabilize the workforce, nursing homes must prioritize occupational health solutions. Here’s how: 🔹On-site or near-site occupational health services for immediate care. 🔹Prevention and wellness programs to preempt injuries and illnesses. 🔹Expert occupational health teams for tailored care. Implementing these strategies can create a safer work environment, enhance employee satisfaction, and improve resident care quality. There are so many misconceptions when it comes to Hospice care. As a result, many who might benefit from hospice care, don’t sign up until the very end. Based on article by Paul Spencer Scott, a writer for Surviving Alzheimer’s: Practical Tips & Soul-Saving Wisdom for Caregivers, here’s what you need to know about hospice care: 1) Hospice is a philosophy of care, not a brick-and-mortar location 2) Signing up doesn’t mean giving up all medical care 3) You have to qualify for hospice, but you can opt out at any time 4) If you start hospice and realize it’s not for you, you can quit 5) You may live longer during the time you have left 6) You can still see your regular doctor 7) The goal of hospice is to help you live well- not sedate you 8) It can enrich and sometimes salvage the last sage of life 9) Hospice is for the entire family 10) Hospice continues after death. The home health care industry is experiencing significant growth, with an increasing number of healthcare professionals, such as nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, aides, speech therapists, and social workers, joining this field. This trend offers numerous benefits, including enhanced income opportunities and personalized care for patients. However, it also presents unique challenges and risks to the safety and health of these workers. Unlike traditional healthcare settings, home health care professionals work in environments beyond their control—the patients’ homes. These settings can expose them to various hazards, ranging from infectious diseases to potential violence. To navigate these risks effectively and ensure their well-being, home health care workers must adopt stringent safety measures. This article provides a comprehensive safety checklist designed to help home health care workers maintain a secure and healthy working environment. https://lnkd.in/gk7HnBpY
