These new rules will apply to all products sold in the EU market regardless of where they are produced. There are a number of ways this regulation and the associated rules will impact industries from raw materials through finished product as well as end of life resource recovery. For example, the preparation of new Digital Product Passport requirements is already underway creating near-term opportunities and challenges for all companies doing business in the EU markets. As of today (July 18, 2024), the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) officially enters into force, marking a significant milestone in the EU's efforts to promote sustainable products by introducing more #Ecodesign criteria. Key Features and Impacts: 🔹 Durability and Resource Efficiency: Products should last longer, resist wear and tear, and use fewer resources in their production. 🔹#DigitalProductPassport: A mechanism to provide clear information about a product's journey, with details still being finalized. 🔹 Substances of Concern: The regulation focuses on restricting substances based on chemical safety, avoiding duplication of existing EU legislation like REACH. #SubstancesOfConcern 🔹 Prioritized Product Groups: The first working plan includes textiles, furniture, tires, detergents, paints, lubricants, and other electronics, with delegated acts expected by 2025. 🔹 Global Cooperation: The EU will work with international partners to ensure compliance with international trade rules and support sustainable product development globally. Companies may need to redesign products to meet durability, recyclability, and other criteria. Products may require labels with environmental impact information, and companies must track substances of concern. Businesses may need to adopt new practices to reduce environmental impact. # Next Steps: 🔹 #EuropeanCommission: Will establish specific requirements for each product group through delegated acts, with the first expected in 2025. 🔹 #DigitalProductPassport: Technical preparation is underway, including the adoption of rules on identifiers, data carriers, and access rights. 🔹 #EcodesignForum: Will be the main arena for consulting stakeholders on the development of rules under ESPR, gathering a wide range of stakeholders and key ecodesign actors.
