I haven’t been very active on LinkedIn lately and I’m not the best at keeping my status updated... But I’m excited to share that I’m now leading the Lab System Change in Fashion at Hecho Por Nosotros! This lab is all about challenging and transforming the current fashion system. This year, we’re focusing on the luxury fashion sector because, while fast fashion gets a lot of attention, we think it’s just as important to take a closer look at the luxury side of things for real systemic change. Our journey began by facilitating a short online panel discussion at a United Nations side event on “Crafting the Creative Economy: Digital Innovation, Culture, and Regenerative Value Chains to Advance the 2030 Agenda,” hosted by Hecho Por Nosoutros in July. From there, we started diving into research that covers different stages of the luxury fashion sector—from how raw materials are produced, to transparency in environmental, and even how products are handled at the end of their life. We believe that every part of the fashion industry needs to be examined, and we’re all about finding solutions through sustainable innovation. (I feel so lucky to be working with such smart and inspiring team members!) During my recent lecture, I shared a powerful quote by André De Shields: "Slowly is the fastest way to get where you want to be." This resonated deeply with me, especially in the context of today's fast-paced fashion industry. While speed is often seen as a virtue, the constant pressure to churn out new collections can stifle creativity and lead to repetitive designs. Taking a step back allows for deeper exploration of trends, materials, and techniques. This slower approach fosters innovation. By slowing down, we gain the space to: Lead: Anticipate and set trends rather than simply following them. Adapt: Respond thoughtfully to evolving consumer preferences and market shifts. Refine: Perfect every detail to ensure exceptional quality and timeless appeal. So, what does slowing down look like in practice? It could involve: Investing in research and development. Prioritizing quality over quantity. Creating space for experimentation. Encouraging collaboration across disciplines. Remember, true innovation often takes time. In partnership with Copenhagen Fashion Week Today, traditional components of the global fashion industry continue to perpetuate legacy strategies and seasonal consumption patterns. As fashion weeks receive even greater attention from global audiences, the culture of consumption that underpins them must be continuously examined — particularly as these objectives are increasingly at odds with the goals of international regulators, most prominently in the European Union. While running as a bi-annual fashion showcase like its counterparts, Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW) is an organisation prepared to disrupt what fashion weeks look like, who they serve and what their lasting impact could become. Since the Autumn/Winter 2023 season, the event — spearheaded by CEO Cecilie Thorsmark — has enforced 18 minimum sustainability requirements for showing brands, which span six key areas across the fashion value chain: strategic design, material choices, working conditions across the supply chain, consumer engagement, set design and show production. To complement this framework, the organisation has invested in a talk programme of panels and discussions to a live audience, running alongside its showcase and aiming to address and unpack some of the fashion industry’s most pertinent issues, from supply chain complexities to championing next generation talent. What an enlightening evening it was, as I attended the New York Fashion Week “Conscious Fashion” event. Organized by Britta Cabanos, Director of Inside Fashion Design & The Conscious Fashion Design Academy, the event brought together a range of speakers from the frontlines of socially-conscious creativity and fashion: Nova Lorraine, Catherine Roggero-Lovisi, Ajay Shrivastav and Siamanda Chege. (Disclaimer: I’m now assisting Chege as Global Communications Advisor to her #SocialEnterprise in #Kenya, Beberavi Collections.) Yet, as I listened to each speaker, I couldn’t help but silently wonder: “How effectively do you prove your impact?” With all due respect, it’s not enough to describe good deeds and meaningful initiatives, if you hope to persuade a smart-but-skeptical audience. So, how well do you illuminate your true results – and back it up with concrete, credible, even verifiable evidence?
