Workforce development expert Parminder K. Jassal (ਪਰਮਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ) says technology shifts have a direct bearing on #robotics and #engineering job market trends. Her company, Unmudl Skills-to-Jobs Marketplace, connects learners and employers via a network of community colleges. The question on whether a trade program focusing on a practical field such as mechatronics can be equated to a four-year degree program remains open-ended. Dr. Jassal's opinion: “Of course, I believe degrees have their value, or I wouldn’t have one. But how does that relate to the job market? And how do you get the stepping stones built so that you can go ahead and start with a job now in a matter of 26 weeks, rather than waiting until getting educated for four years and then going, ‘Hmm! That wasn’t exactly what I wanted to do’.” Lots of engineering jobs tips in this video. Machine Design #mechatronics #skillstraining #trades

Hi, my name is Ashlyn Brownell. I am a recent high school graduate and an incoming freshman at the University of Houston. This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Siemens Digital Industries Software as a Technical Intern and work for John Nixon. At the start of the internship, John shared how he teamed up with VEERUM and The University of Texas at Austin to create a digital twin of the university's chemical facility. However, any essential documentation on the plant was lost, and there was a $0 budget. So, he needed our help to reverse-engineer the point cloud data into a mesh to produce a convergent model: ● For the entire facility ● Without any assistance from blueprints or drawings ● Created on a company laptop ● Primarily using open-source programs Yet, two problems immediately occurred in our attempts to transport the data inside VEERUM into an open-source meshing software, MeshLab. MeshLab did not support our original file type, and our work computers could not handle rendering such large amounts of data. So, we needed a solution. After many days of experimentation, David Townsend, a fellow intern, and I created a process to transform smaller portions of point cloud data into 3D models. David discovered a way to clip sections of the facility within VEERUM and then convert the file through CloudCompare so we can import it into MeshLab without issue. Then, I took it from there and discovered a way to triangulate the point cloud data into a mesh while maintaining the original data's shape and quality, then turned it into a convergent model with NX. Due to our findings, we set up a procedure for our team to produce sectioned-out 3D models of the UT Chemical Facility, which can be recombined later. As a team, we continued to collaborate and improve the process, including using Blender to fix data we could not in MeshLab. By the end of the internship, we successfully reverse-engineered large portions of the UT Chemical Facility. We documented our process, laying out the foundation for creating a digital twin without spending thousands of dollars or having high-tech computers. Work that unlocked: ● Powerful technical marketing support capabilities aiding the mining industry and subsequent energy of chemicals ● Global sales pipeline revenue for Siemens Digital Industries Software Although my team's work ends here, the creation of the digital twin does not, as we transfer our work to the The University of Texas at Austin to continue what we started. Thank you so much, John Nixon and Siemens Digital Industries Software, for this opportunity. Also, thank you to everyone I worked with this summer, VEERUM, and numerous Siemens departments, for your feedback and help. I have learned so much from this experience and can not wait to see what our work turns into.
