The sun is set to beam down on San Francisco as a significant portion of the photonics industry C level management will assemble at the linked events of #BIOS #Photonicswest, #AR/VR/MR and #quantumwest. Why is the kick off event of the year becoming so significant? Well optics is speedly catching up with semiconductor and electronics in terms of economic significance. There is no simple moores law that maps this, but it is as relentless. In fact Photonics is undoutdly the lever that is helping sustain increasing advances in compute and will no doubt encroach on electronics which has until now dominated compute logic functions. The old adage that photons don't interact with matter, electrons do, is no longer meaningful. By design and materials selection photons can be non interacting and loss less (Fibers), Highly interacting (Lasers, detectors (single photon detectors!) and non-linear (Quantum dots). Even memory stores for photons are available #Orcacomputing. All this can be fabricated on a #PIC (Photonic integrated circuit). So which will be the biggest Photonics market going forward? Medical, Automotive, Defense, Datacomms, Consumer.... Depends how you count it and I think we are going to need different market segementations moving forward . #Photonicswest2025 will give a good indiction. What is clear is innovation is continuing at great pace and their will be much change and continued growth.
