A rise in the prevalence of childhood #anaemia between two rounds of the National Family Health Surveys of 2016 and 2021 has given rise to much debate. The government responded by declaring mandatory iron fortification of rice to be distributed through all public food supplementation and security programmes, despite ongoing debates on efficacy and toxicity, and concerns about lack of due process and public consultation. The net result is a serious public health contradiction, raising questions about the need to rush into a fortification programme with widespread ramifications upon the food security system without a clear rationale or baseline data. https://lnkd.in/gVufksFk

Adolescence is a critical period for growth and development, and healthy diet paired with essential nutrition services play a pivotal role in reducing lifelong risks of malnutrition. Unfortunately, many interventions often fall short of reaching beyond school walls. That’s where #Swabhimaan steps in, bridging this gap with innovative, community-driven solutions. Launched under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) in partnership with #UNICEFIndia, Swabhimaan is making waves in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha by bringing vital nutrition services right to communities. Through the dedication of #PoshanSakhis (community resource persons), women’s collectives, and Kishori adolescent girls’ groups, Swabhimaan extends essential support and guidance where it’s needed most. Evidence underscores the transformative role of women’s collectives under #DAYNRLM in promoting #dietarydiversity and mobilizing community-led demand. Together, they’re enhancing access to crucial nutrition services for adolescents, paving the way for healthier, stronger futures. #AdolescentNutrition #Swabhimaan #CommunityEmpowerment #PoshanSakhi #NutritionMatters #DAYNRLM #UNICEFIndia #WomenEmpowerment #Bihar #Chhattisgarh #Odisha #ROSHNI
