Thoroughly enjoyed reading FEMA's "Fact Sheet on Art and Culture: Helping People Before, During, and After Disasters". It's refreshing to see how FEMA is positioning itself at the intersection of art, emergency management, and community resilience. As someone who typically focuses on disaster impacts upon housing, infrastructure, and businesses, this is an interesting avenue of exploration. #FEMA #ArtandCulture #CommunityResilience #EmergencyManagement https://lnkd.in/ehaEUQs5

State Representative (D) for Milton and Randolph, Massachusetts. Democratic nominee for State Senate on November 5th.
Two things in this article RE: changes at FEMA As someone that back in the day built dozens of ADA ramps and low-rise staircases and made grant funding available for others to be built so that disaster survivors could get back into homes or temporary homes ...the changes to FEMA individual assistance support in this space is incredibly welcome news! Also, removing SBA from the individual assistance application process...About. Damn. Time. This removes a systemic barrier that delayed and thwarted many people from applying for and receiving appropriate assistance. Bravo! https://lnkd.in/ergEwGGH

Jake Bittle writes in Grist that FEMA will fundamentally overhaul how it delivers aid to survivors, launching new programs to provide quick cash payments to those in need and eliminating much of the bureaucracy that hampers aid access. He quotes DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas as saying, “For too long, in the face of too many natural disasters and extreme weather events, survivors have had to overcome many barriers to access to federal assistance.” Shana Udvardy, M.S., CFM, a policy analyst at the Union of Concerned Scientists, opined that these reforms “will offer disaster survivors a smoother road to recovery.” #climateadaptation #climateaction #resilience #FEMA #AdaptationLeader

I help communities become disaster-resilient by creating plans and practices that match their vision of recovery.
In the wake of disasters, it's imperative that our recovery efforts extend to every corner of our communities. That's why the Disaster Equity and Building Resilience caucus is championing a cause that speaks directly to the heart of fairness and justice. The mission is clear 👉 to ensure that the recovery and resilience-building endeavors initiated by the government are inclusive and sensitive to the diverse needs of all citizens, particularly those in low-income neighborhoods and communities of color. At the forefront of the agenda is the commitment to fostering meaningful dialogues and partnerships among lawmakers and stakeholders. In a powerful statement echoing the sentiments of our caucus, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) articulated a sentiment that resonates deeply with our cause ⤵️ “Whether you receive assistance and can properly recover after a disaster shouldn’t depend on your zip code or background. For decades, we have seen low-income communities and communities of color left behind after a disaster strikes. That is not fair or equitable." Fairness and equity must be the guiding principles as we navigate the path toward a more resilient and inclusive future. Want more information like this? Have a read. This is a very interesting concept which tries to address the recovery imbalance we have seen in disadvantaged communities. I think this is a good start and a great imitative, but as the article goes into, there can be some unintended ripple effects that could negatively impact the residents in these communities. It will be interesting to see how these potential negative impacts are mitigated and what lessons are learned from the initial roll out. Is this something that we could apply here in Canada? I feel like undertaking a similar initiative would at least allow us to predict which communities/regions may need the most support during disasters and determine how we can best focus our recovery strategies and resources. Thoughts? #emergencymanagement #emergencypreparedness #emergencyresponse #disasterresilience #disaster #fema #publicsafety

As a local official dedicated to serving your community, you understand the importance of making your community more resilient against natural disasters. ⛈🌪🌊 You’re not discouraged by other communities’ failed attempts to secure funding. Instead, you look to the stories of success for inspiration. You know that, with the right team, your community can be a success story, too. But where do you start? The FEMA application process seems complicated - the communities receiving funding must have a secret formula, right? 📌 How are they doing it? 📌 What do they know that you don’t? 📌 Why are their projects selected instead of yours? FEMA funding can bridge the gap between the flood relief projects your community needs and your department’s budget. What would it take for you to FINALLY get the help you need to prepare a proper FEMA grant application? 👉🏼 FEMA can’t provide funding for your project if you don’t submit a grant application. If you're ready to explore grant options, my weekly newsletter provides funding, planning, and policy insights tailored to your unique needs and challenges as a small suburban community.
