Facilitaed by our WHS team and SSE, Mick Barry, EQ Resources recently took another step towards bolstering its #safetyculture with an event called Stop and Prop. Imagine gathering everyone on site, from the frontline crew to the office staff, to focus on one thing: making their workplace safer. That's exactly what happened, and it wasn't just any meeting. We were honoured to host Garry Nichols, a Workplace Health and Safety Queensland Advocate to share his story as an amputee and provide insights that really made everyone think about how they approach safety every day. Here are the highlights on what this initiative was all about: 🛑Stop and Prop Initiative: We hit the pause button on the regular day-to-day, to remind us all of the EQR values and talk about how everyone can contribute to a safer work environment. 🗣Guest Speaker : First hand experiences and insights bravely shared amongst peers can change how we see things. A real reminder on the importance of safety practices and avoiding complacency in the workplace. 💭A Learning Moment: This wasn’t about ticking boxes. It was a genuine opportunity for everyone at EQ Resources to deepen their understanding and commitment to safety across the Mt Carbine site. ⁉️But why is this so important? Because, it ties back to a bigger picture in Queensland’s mining industry. This initiative aligns with findings from "The state of safety reporting culture in Queensland’s mining industry" ,a recent survey that delivered some interesting findings: ➡️Positive Findings: Strong team support for safety among mine workers. Adherence to safety standards and reporting of concerns is encouraged. ➡️Areas for Improvement: Enhancing the clarity and ease of use of reporting systems. Increasing recognition of positive safety behaviors. Involving frontline workers more in safety initiatives. 👷♀️👷🏽♂️We believe that by facilitating conversation, we are nudging our colleagues to have a hard look at how things are done and encouraging discussion on how they can be done better. It’s about building a culture where safety isn’t just a poster on the wall but a real, living thing that everyone is part of. Now, that’s something worth talking about. #worksafehomesafe #actsafefeelsafe #safework #safety #miningsafety Survey is available from the Comissioner for Resources Safety and Health's website.

#13 From Dominoes to Modern Safety: The Legacy of Heinrich's Domino Theory of Accident Causation Imagine a row of dominoes, each one standing precariously, ready to topple with a single push. This was the groundbreaking visualization Herbert W. Heinrich introduced in the 1930s with his Domino Theory of Accident Causation. Heinrich’s insight was simple yet profound: workplace accidents result from a chain of events, and if we address the root causes early, we can stop the domino effect and prevent accidents before they happen. Heinrich's theory has shaped the field of occupational health and safety for decades. It taught us that unsafe acts and conditions are the starting points of accidents, emphasizing the importance of proactive safety measures. However, our understanding of workplace safety has evolved. Today, we recognize that focusing solely on individual behavior is not enough. Modern safety management considers the complex interplay of organizational culture, management practices, and systemic issues. By building on Heinrich’s foundational work, we now embrace comprehensive safety models that address a broader range of factors. This evolution ensures that our workplaces are not just safer, but more resilient. As we continue to innovate and improve our safety practices, Heinrich’s dominoes remind us of the critical importance of addressing root causes to prevent accidents and protect our most valuable asset: our people. #WorkplaceSafety #HeinrichDominoTheory #ProtectOurPeople #ExploringOSH

Workplace safety culture is an essential component of any business. But you can improve your company’s safety culture by following these eight steps: 1. Develop a comprehensive health and safety policy. 2. Give regular training and encourage staff to undertake health and safety courses. 3. Provide safety resources, assess risk, and audit regularly. 4. Encourage open communication. 5. Recognise and reward safe behaviour. 6. Lead by example. 7. Promote a positive work environment. 8. Emphasise the importance of mental health. At least by following the above process, a positive safety culture can be implemented at the site. #tata_power. #safety_culture. #positive_safety_culture.
