Gender equality in progress 🟠 Here’s what international women’s rights advocacy looks like ⬇ Over the past few weeks, Equality Now’s team from across the world and our partners took part in various regional and international events to further our advocacy work, from the Organización de los Estados Americanos General Assembly and the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean to the 56th United Nations Human Rights Council session. We were also in Nepal to launch SAMAJ, a new coalition of 18 organizations and individuals in South Asia uniting voices against sexual violence. The issues we highlighted ranged from the protection of youth from sexual violence in Latin America to economic violence instigated by inequality in family laws to the implications of transnational and cross-border female genital mutilation. These engagements reaffirmed the importance of such international spaces for advocacy and direct engagement with key stakeholders by Equality Now and our partners. Want to learn more? People of all backgrounds must be able to exercise their right to equal treatment and have access to equal opportunities. Today marks #ZeroDiscriminationDay. At the Migration Policy Group, we advance evidence-based policies on non-discrimination together with partners across Europe. Here are two examples of how we put our commitment to zero-discrimination into practice: ➡ Our latest European Equality Law Review 2023 provides an overview of the relevant developments in gender equality and non-discrimination law from the period 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023, at the European and national levels. It was authored in close collaboration with the Human European Consultancy and contains four in-depth articles written by Dolores Morondo Taramundi from the University of Deusto, Panos Kapotas from the University of Portsmouth, Sébastien Van Drooghenbroeck of UC Louvain-Saint-Louis-Bruxelles, and Roma activist and scholar Iulius Rostas. Read here: https://bit.ly/42UyE3B ➡ With our project “Tackling Structural & Institutional Racism in 8 EU Member States” the Migration Policy Group, with support from the Robert Bosch Stiftung, facilitates evidence-based policymaking and identifies gaps in addressing structural and institutional racism. Together with partners, we are collecting data and evidence on structural racism in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Romania, Czechia and Latvia. At the end of this project, we will provide policy recommendations to improve existing anti-racism policies and end structural racism in practice. 🌟 After nearly 30 years of advocacy, Ghana has made a significant step toward gender equality by passing its Affirmative Action #GenderEquality Act 2024 🎉. This historic law mandates that women occupy at least 30% of decision-making roles across government, trade unions, and private sectors, with the goal of reaching 50% by 2030—aligning with the UN’s gender equality objectives. While this marks a victory for women’s rights advocates, concerns remain around effective enforcement and its long-term impact 🤔. The law arrives just before Ghana's December 2024 elections , setting the stage for increased women’s political participation. What do you think? 🤷♀️ How will this law change the landscape for women in Ghana? A Global Imperative 🌍 In the context of global polycrisis, the importance of quality care provision shines brighter than ever. Governments worldwide face a crucial responsibility in providing this public good. Yet, increased private financing of public services poses great challenges to equitable access. Our latest briefing explores this pressing issue, emphasising the essential role of publicly funded and managed services in advancing gender equality and women's rights. From insightful research led by Global South organisations in Brazil, India, Zambia, and beyond, we underscore the cost-effectiveness, equity and sustainability of publicly financed services. This briefing also outlines actionable recommendations from Southern campaigns and organisations, calling governments and institutions in the Global North to take action by increasing the fiscal space available to governments for quality gender-transformative public services and social protection. #internationalwomensday2024 'A Better World: Ireland's Policy for International Development' establishes #genderequality as one of 4 core policy priorities and a necessary condition for sustainable global development. A Better World, adopts a twin track approach in establishing #genderequality as a core policy priority: 1. Ireland commits to scale up our engagement to integrate gender equality across all our interventions and in our wider foreign policy; and 2. Ireland commits to increasing allocations to interventions directly dedicated to achieving gender equality. These commitments include: o increased funding for women’s rights organisations; o strengthened support for women’s political participation and women’s participation in international peacebuilding; o intensifying our work on Women, Peace and Security and on gender-based Violence #gbv, in particular, in humanitarian settings. #investinwomen https://lnkd.in/dU9abp4X https://lnkd.in/d5UnuTYd
