Australia's Thriving Tech Landscape 🇦🇺 Just wrapped up a fantastic business trip to Australia, and I'm incredibly bullish on the country's IT market! 1️⃣ High Demand, Limited Resources: Australian businesses are hungry for innovative IT solutions across industries. However, there's a clear need to bridge the gap between demand and available resources. A majority of the organizations I spoke with mentioned that they are considering Vietnam as a potential destination in addition to India and Europe. 2️⃣ AI Focus for the Future: The conversations with clients revealed a strong interest in AI solutions. Attending Viva Technology in Paris 🇫🇷 last week was a remarkable experience, showcasing the latest innovations and trends in technology. Here are some key observations and insights from the event: 💼 A Hub of Innovation and Talent: Viva Tech is undoubtedly one of the premier technology events, attracting high-caliber professionals and innovators. The opportunity to connect with such a diverse array of experts is invaluable. However, the event's sheer size can make it challenging to navigate and extract the most value. 🚧 Logistical Challenges: Despite its prominence, the event faced several logistical hurdles. Security checks were notably slow and inefficient, leading to long wait times. The layout of the stands seemed somewhat arbitrary, which, combined with a subpar mobile app, made it difficult to maximize networking opportunities. 🌐 Accelerating AI Adoption: A recurring theme at Viva Tech was the acceleration of AI adoption across industries. Many small and medium-sized companies are now prioritising strategic consulting to understand AI's potential and to build robust foundations for future applications. However, there's a clear gap in identifying qualified partners who can offer both deep technical expertise and strategic business insight. ❌ Strategic Missteps: Some organisations have rushed into AI investments without thorough groundwork, resulting in suboptimal outcomes. Diving deep into the AI world was both inspiring and enlightening. A meaningful conversation with Dan, the host, who shared the key challenges in AI technology, particularly how to stay connected and keep pace with evolving tech. A special "Aha" moment? Realizing why tech events, especially on AI, are always fully booked. It’s not just because AI is a hot topic; the shift to working from home has left many eager for real-life interactions. This craving for connection was palpable among all attendees. Interestingly, this ties back to what a friend in HR mentioned: nowadays, offering the option to work from home at least once a week is becoming a key consideration for the younger workforce. At PCMA Asia Pacific (APAC)'s The Business of Events 2024 - UNLEARN, I listened to the Plenary Keynote: The Future of Risk-Driven Leadership by Scott Bales. He reminded us on the importance to embrace risk as a path to innovation, especially in today's unpredictable economy with geopolitical instability & the super-rapid pace of technological development like AI. Here are the 3 insights I gained from him: 1) Utilize AI to gain collective wisdom None of us has the answer to everything, but we together can solve anything Inside the head of all event planners attending, we have 1,000+ years of expertise in designing great experience, which mostly stay undocumented What IF (in the words of Evangelina S =) we could document all of these breadth & depth of insights & experience to learn & support each other?! Definitely we can have not only transformational, also life-changing events! 2) Design great attendee experience Why limit our design to simply event contents & logistics? People yearn for authentic experience, let's utilize the local elements to engage our attendees through their five senses, including taste! Who doesn't love eating delicious local dishes?! Hint: Scott Bales loves Indonesian spicy food, his last visit to Manada was really memorable. It is an opportunity to invite him to speak folks! 3) Co-design event takeaways for attendees How often attendees just don't implement what they learn? Collaborate with attendees on event takeaways to review & share with their colleagues & friends. Then, provide an implementation task-list & connect them with other attendees to learn & support each other (social learning). Thank you Scott Bales for a very insightful talk! Emerging Trends in Global Science and Technology Innovation The latest data from the Global Innovation Index 2023 offers a revealing look at the world's premier science and technology (S&T) hubs. The 2023 landscape has been shaped by significant developments, including the introduction of revolutionary products and the rapid expansion of AI technologies like ChatGPT. Our new map, featured first on the Voronoi app, provides an in-depth view of the top 50 S&T hubs driving innovation. These hubs are not just geographical locations; they are the epicenters of creativity and advancement, evaluated by a combination of international patent applications and scientific publications. East Asia leads the charge with the Tokyo-Yokohama cluster, accounting for over 10% of all patent applications from 2018 to 2022. The region's dominance is further evidenced by the presence of four other East Asian hubs in the top five. The first U.S. cluster, the San Francisco Bay Area, stands out not just for its volume of innovation but also for its intensity relative to the population. Home to tech giants like Adobe and Google, it's a region where innovation is as dense as the fog that famously blankets the Golden Gate. China's S&T clusters have shown remarkable growth, now totaling 24 among the top 100, surpassing the United States with 21. These clusters are climbing the ranks, with the exception of Beijing, which dropped slightly. Beyond the high-income economies, clusters in middle-income countries like Brazil, India, Iran, Türkiye, and Russia are making significant strides, marking a global shift towards widespread innovation.
