Caught the first episode of Fallout last night and as a huge fan of the franchise, I think it's really hitting the mark. The music, the humor, the set design, it feels game-y but also feels right for television. It sparked a conversation with my husband about how these adaptations (Fallout, Halo, The Last of Us) are brilliantly starting out with a built-in fandom; A fandom comprised of the millennial and older gen-z audiences that streaming shows are targeting. But on the flip side, how many people are watching these shows, never having picked up the games, and now may be inspired to make that purchase? It's not a new concept - Star Wars has been doing the cross-platform, cross-franchise thing for ages. But to see it START with a video game as inspiration, rather than a movie inspiring a video game, is a testament to the cultural realization that games are art, they tell deep stories, and its worth expanding that reach beyond the controller. I want to share a recent experience with a #Netflix game "Reigns" on my TV (which is currently in Beta). Not expecting a lot from it, I scanned the code I saw on the screen to use my phone as a gaming controller. From a #gamingdesign standpoint, it involved simple right/left swipes on my phone—influencing the storyline with each choice. The narrative is laced with surprises and humor that kept me quite engaged. Now, being the #instructionaldesigner, my mind naturally drifted to what's happening behind the scenes. Every decision I made had a ripple effect on the #scoring elements at the top of the screen. It's not just about picking options randomly—you've got to make choices that align with the game's goals to keep your "game life" intact. I experimented with different approaches—sticking to a consistent set of values didn't quite do the trick, and random choices were a dead end (no surprise there!). The way to proceed is to pay attention to those scoring metrics and make decisions that help you progress. As the game unfolded, more cards got thrown into the mix, expanding the entire "game universe" experience. Achieving goals allowed me to collect objects and unlock new stages—adding another layer of complexity. That being said, Netflix is stepping beyond its usual mobile game offerings by offering #cloudgaming. I have been running TTRPGs as a hobby for an over a year now. Previously a niche hobby, TTRPGs, especially the classic Dungeons & Dragons, has been gaining new popularity for years now, growing into a thriving sub-culture of entertainment, especially with the rise of relatively high-budget companies like #Dropout or #CriticalRole, the later even having a series on Amazon Prime. Not to even speak of the thriving third-party markets around #dnd5e in particular. I wonder how far this genre of entertainment, now so intimate, can grow in the future? Will Actual Plays be broadcast in National Television (assuming it exists) or Theater, the latter of which has already happened in the case of Critical Role, or will TTRPGs, while growing, still remain a niche nerdy hobby? It will remain awesome either way!
