What better place to talk about the people’s schools than the People’s House? Thank you, The White House and Heather T. Clark for the tremendous honor to be surrounded by so many relentless school leaders from around the country! Quick takeaways from the first-ever White House Summit for Sustainable and Healthy K-12 School Buildings and Grounds: 1) This administration has provided unprecedented funding for #school building improvements, but there is still a tremendous need for financial and administrative support. Only 2% of grant applications were funded. 2) Systematic, national data collection of school building condition is critical to inform grant applications, identify needs, and understand greenhouse gas emissions. 3) Schools are at the frontlines of the #climate crisis (wildfire, heat) and are still responding to legacy pollutants (lead, asbestos). #Health equity must be a priority in our investment and inform our grant delivery mechanisms. This was an important celebration of progress, and yet it recommitted me to continue/accelerate the work to improve environmental quality for our most vulnerable learners, selfless educators, and tireless staff. Let’s keep going!
