World Book Day®
Did you know that:
· 38% of 11-year-olds in England from disadvantaged backgrounds leave primary school unable to read to the expected standard (DfE, 2022)
· 43% of English adults can’t read well enough to understand basic health information (NHS)
· 1 in 5 children aged 5-8 don't own a single book (National Literacy Trust, 2022)
· 3 x as many 6-7 year olds are now very low attaining readers than before COVID (NFER, Nov 2022)
· £80 Billion is the annual cost of illiteracy to the UK economy (World Literacy Foundation)
Balfour Beatty is a proud partner of @Chapter One UK and has a volunteer Group that supports Chapter One who operate an online reading volunteer programme connecting schools and families with corporate volunteers who spend 30 mins reading online with the same child each week.
Over time, this 1:1 support helps transform each child’s reading confidence and ability Chapter One Video
It’s the most amazing and rewarding opportunity for me to support a student in Cumbria and to see how they are developing over the weeks since we had our first reading session.
Over time this 1:1 really can make a difference and the support helps transform each child’s reading confidence and ability (and it’s a highlight of my week).
Today is World Book Day®, which is about getting more children, from all backgrounds, developing a life-long habit of reading for pleasure, benefitting from the improved life chances this brings them.
There is no right or wrong way to enjoy reading, and we can #ReadYourWay.
