Thanks to Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) for inviting me to the roundtable with Jeremy Miles, Cabinet Secretary. It's great to be part of the conversation around innovation, skills and business support in Wales. Plus good to see some familiar faces! In my view, industry (including small businesses) must continue to be involved in the co-creation of public funded innovation and business support programmes. The mantra has to be "done with" and not "done to". However, this absolutely doesn't mean more lengthy consultation surveys or events that no small business has capacity to engage with. Then an "oh well, we did ask"! #NLW2024 Day 4 - todays theme is "Night time". Did you know that 39% of jobs in Glasgow are between the hours of 6pm - 6am? Many of these are, of course, hospitality jobs. The Night Time Industries Association aims to increase awareness of the benefits that the night time industry brings to the economy, and lobbies on behalf of workers within this important sector. In the first half of 2023, two pubs closed every day. In the last year, two nightclubs closed per week and five restaurants have closed daily. The Night Time economy has struggled to recover from Covid. Does the industry need less regulation?

Today with Demos, we are kickstarting the British Partnership Council, a collaboration that will bring together policy makers and businesses to put the desire for partnership into practice. With the new Labour Government focused on ‘mission-driven government’, partnership will be central to achieving the growth and innovation the Government is striving for. Partnership in Practice is the first step in seizing this challenge, identifying six barriers that need to be addressed and six policy options that the new government should support to encourage stronger partnership working. We’ve published our final Action Plan in response to the Local Government Association (LGA) Peer Challenge. This marks a significant milestone in our transformation journey to ensure the best outcomes for our residents. Newham is a place of vibrant diversity, and our goal is simple: to build a fairer community where everyone can thrive. The LGA Peer Challenge report acknowledged our progress, highlighting commendable improvements in various services and initiatives. There are challenges around prioritisation in a backdrop of increased budget pressures on local government. That's why our Action Plan is crucial - it outlines our commitment to address these issues head-on through focus, collaboration and diligence. With collective ownership from elected members, officers and our dedicated staff, we're already putting in place key strategies, like refreshing service plans, developing a new workforce strategy and enhancing our governance framework. Our Action Plan isn't just a document; it's a promise to deliver on the vision for a fairer Newham. By fostering a culture of learning and improvement, we're ensuring sustainable progress for our residents - the heart of everything we do.
