Two major umbrella labor unions in South Korea are planning large-scale rallies in Seoul and other major cities nationwide to commemorate Labor Day, according to police. The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions is organizing rallies in 15 cities and regions, involving around 85,000 members. In Seoul, a rally will begin in the central district of Jongno with 25,000 members marching in two directions. Additionally, 7,000 members of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions are planning to gather in Seoul's Yeouido on the same day. The National Police Agency (NPA) has decided to deploy 162 police units with 10,000 officers to the scenes across the nation, including 101 units in Seoul. They are prepared to respond sternly to any illegal acts by the groups, such as occupying streets or interfering with government officials at the rally sites. NPA Commissioner General Yoon Hee-keun emphasized the importance of safeguarding registered, legal rallies while firmly addressing any illegal behaviors to promote a law-abiding rally culture in society. With the upcoming Labor Day rallies, the police are bracing for potential challenges while ensuring the safety and security of the events. The intention is to strike a balance between respecting the right to peaceful assembly and maintaining public order. The police are committed to upholding the law and maintaining order during the rallies to create a safe and peaceful environment for all participants and the general public. #AsiaRisk #Protest,Demonstration,Dissent #SouthKorea Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gW4Bfejj

🔔 In a new 🔐 paper with Gesine Höltmann and Swen Hutter, we investigate union-sponsored protests in and outside of the workplace in 27 European countries between 2000 and 2021. 🔔 👉 https://lnkd.in/eAtw-TPW 🧑🏫 Despite the documented decline of union membership, unions continue to mobilise as one of the most prominent actors in protest politics. We document that union protests in the public sphere outweigh workplace-related strikes. Especially in contexts of low institutional access, unions rely heavily on protest beyond the workplace. 🗞️ The paper has been out open-access for a while in Socio-Economic Review 🗞️ Take a look 👉 https://lnkd.in/eAtw-TPW

Workers, unions, and activist groups are set to demonstrate across Europe this Wednesday, 1st May, as people mark International Workers' Day - May Day - across the continent. Demonstrations are seen annually on May Day in European cities, but, with ongoing grievances linked to cost of living, low pay, and industry-specific issues (such as the recent farmers' protests), the number of, and attendances at, these protests could be higher than normal this year. Political activists and environmental groups may also take the opportunity to join the protests, with issues such as climate change and the Israel-Palestine conflict both causing frequent large-scale demonstrations across Europe recently - the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions has called on employees in the international trade union movement to take action in solidarity with Palestine by going on strike, for example. The demonstrations are likely to cause significant disruption to travel and business, while clashes could also occur, and should be planned for out of precaution. Protests are not just planned in capital cities, but across Europe, as demonstrated in the image below. At Intelligence Fusion we have mapped more than 340 separate planned demonstrations ahead of time that are due to take place in Europe on May Day. We frequently identify and map protests before they happen as part of our threat intelligence coverage, helping our clients stay ahead of and prepare for potential threats and disruption. Being Silent is always a choice, Using your Voice is always a Challenge. Challenge yourself to use your voice so those that haven't found theirs have the confidence they won't be alone when they do speak up!
If you are afraid of dealing with unions then you are telling more about yourself in reality. Fair negotiations are the key to a growing company. Those that work to fit off unions are showing they can only lead through an imbalance of power not strength and community.

Dear Linkedln Family, In recent weeks, nationwide protests by labor unions, including the National Labor Congress and Trade Union Congress, have rocked Nigeria's 36 states. These demonstrations demand a realistic minimum wage adjustment due to soaring living costs. As tensions rise, understanding what the law entails on protests becomes paramount. To Start with: The 1999 Constitution as Amended under Section 40 of Chapter IV provides for the Right to Peaceful Assembly and Association. This section explicitly provides Every person shall be entitled to assemble freely and associate with other persons, and he may form or belong to any political party, trade union or any other association for the protection of his interests. A key point to take from here is the recognition of Trade Unions and their rights to undergo peaceful assembly and protest. The Public Order Act provides for under Section 1 that “For the purposes of the proper and peaceful conduct of public assemblies, meetings and processions and subject to section 11 of this Act, the Governor of each State is hereby empowered to direct the conduct of all assemblies, meetings and processions on the public roads or places of public resort in the State and prescribe the route by which and the times at which any procession may pass.” Section 6(3) of the same act reiterates that “ Any assembly, meeting or procession which- (a) takes place without a licence issued under section 1 of this Act; or (b) violates any condition of any licence granted under section 1 as aforementioned; or (c) neglects to obey any order given under section 2 of this Act, shall be deemed to be an unlawful assembly, and all persons taking part in such assembly, meeting or procession, and in the case of an assembly, meeting or procession for which no licence has been issued, all persons taking part in the convening, collecting or directing of the assembly, meeting or procession, shall be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine of N1,000 or imprisonment for 6 months or to both such fine and imprisonment.” Do you think the provisions stipulated in the Public Order Act is in tandem with the Fundamental Human Rights of every citizen? How will this provision affect the enforceable right of the Organized Labour in voicing the concerns of Nigerians workers? Feel Free to drop your opinions, perspectives, criticisms and contributions in the comments.

We Cannot Withdraw From A Protest We Didn’t Organize – NLC Labour said that it stands in solidarity with the Nigerian people over the current economic hardship and worsening hunger in the country but maintained that only the organisers of the protest can decide whether to pull out or continue with the protest. THE NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS CANNOT WITHDRAW FROM A PROTEST THAT IT DID NOT ORGANISE A Press Release A news report of the withdrawal of the Nigeria Labour Congress from the widely discussed national protest has been brought to our attention. The Nigeria Labour Congress debunks such story as patently false. The truth is that the Nigeria Labour Congress cannot withdraw from a protest that it did not organise. It is only the organisers of the speculated national protest that can decide to pull out or continue with the protest. The Nigeria Labour Congress has internal trade union mechanisms especially leadership decision-making processes that its industrial actions such as protests pass through before such activities are undertaken. Yet, the fad that the Nigeria Labour Congress is not the body organising the protest does not mean that Organised Labour is oblivious of the dire living conditions Nigerians have been subjected to by the harsh economic policies of government. The Nigeria Labour Congress stands in solidarity with the Nigerian people In this very trying and excruciating times. Pursuant to proactive engagement with the issues canvassed by the protest organisers, we have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to invite the leaders of the protest movement to dialogue on their demands. We have advised that it would be counter-productive for govemment to meet the widespread anger in the land with brute force. Once again, we implore the Federal Government and the sub-national governments to listen to the cries of the Nigerian people and do the needful. After all, it is said that the voice of the people is the voice of God. While there is no cap on how much parties can spend, candidates are limited to Rs 95 lakh for #LokSabha constituencies and Rs 40 lakh for Assembly seats. In some smaller states and Union Territories, the cap is Rs 75 lakh and Rs 28 lakh for the Lok Sabha and Assemblies, respectively. The spending limits have been increased over the years, including from 2019, when these were Rs 70 lakh for Lok Sabha candidates and Rs 28 lakh for Assembly contenders. The expenditure limit refers to the amount a candidate is allowed to legally spend on election campaigning, including public meetings, rallies, advertisements, posters and banners, and vehicles. Akbayan on Luneta and Davao rallies: REJECT "DYNASTY WAR," CANCEL CHA-CHA, JAIL DUTERTE In response to the pro-charter change (cha-cha) rally in Luneta on Sunday, and the counter-mobilization by the Duterte camp in Davao City, Akbayan Party called on the Filipino people to rise above the elite squabbles, which it branded as a "dynasty war," and instead join the "democratic and progressive alternative" it is collectively building with other democratic and reform-oriented forces. According to Akbayan President Rafaela David, "The Luneta and Davao rallies highlight a distressing reality: the dynastic war among ruling elites, which serves only to further cement the interests of political dynasties and entrenched elites, while neglecting the pressing needs of the Filipino populace." David condemned both the Luneta and Davao mobilizations as "elite-led," aimed at consolidating power among those pushing for cha-cha, and evading accountability for past injustices for the Dutertes, who are fashioning themselves as anti-cha-cha oppositionists. Dutertes: "Fake cha-cha oppositionists" We denounce the Dutertes' attempt to hijack the people's anti-cha-cha struggle and repackage themselves as fake opposition leaders. Their participation in this issue is merely a ploy to gain an advantage in their elite power struggle against the faction of President Bongbong Marcos Jr. Human rights violators cannot be constitutional champions. Instead of inserting himself in the people's struggle, Mr. Rodrigo Duterte should prepare for his looming ICC arrest, and imprisonment," David asserted. "Equally, we oppose moves to revise our constitution as they only serve to erode the people's rights and freedoms, extend the term limits of trapos, and further expose our economy to foreign domination. Amid the people's pressing concerns, cha-cha is divisive, self-serving, and unnecessary," David said. "Democratic and progressive center" Instead of being manipulated by these warring elite factions, Akbayan urges the public to reject both camps and join a democratic and progressive center for real change. "All relevant democratic, progressive, and reform-oriented forces are now in the middle of building a strong alternative center of power against cha-cha advocates and the Dutertes. The month of February will give birth to this new and pluralist gathering. We encourage the people to join this movement. We will reject the toxic and cynical politics of the ruling elite and strive to forge a new path that embraces inclusivity, transparency, and good governance," David stated. David said that Akbayan Party is a co-convenor of Tindig Pilipinas, a broad democratic coalition which is currently gathering different forces for a series of activities this February to mark the 38th year anniersary of the Edsa People Power Revolution and voice strong opposition to charter change.
