Many areas across the country have thunderstorms, some places over 80 mm. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported significant rainfall on October 16-17, affecting the Northwest and Southern regions. Some locations, like Bum Nua in Lai Chau and Son Thai in Khanh Hoa, recorded over 100mm of rain, with the highest at 154.9mm. Continued rain and thunderstorms are expected, with forecasts predicting an additional 20-40mm and localized showers exceeding 80mm throughout October 17. Warnings for flash floods and landslides have been issued for vulnerable areas, particularly in Lao Cai and Ha Giang, where saturated soil conditions heighten risks. Mountainous districts are identified as especially susceptible to these disasters. The heavy rainfall may disrupt local traffic, damage infrastructure, and require proactive measures from local authorities. Weather conditions on October 17 are expected to be cloudy with rain and local storms, with temperatures ranging from 20-33 degrees Celsius. The Central Highlands and Southern regions will likely experience moderate to heavy rains, alongside potential tornadoes and strong winds during thunderstorms. Recent heavy rains in Lai Chau have already caused localized flooding and property damage in Muong Te district. #AsiaRisk #ExtremeWeatherEvents #Vietnam Get a full accounting of the security situation in Asia by subscribing to Security Asia. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has issued a warning about the potential for consecutive storms and floods in the East Sea towards the end of this year. While two low-pressure areas are being monitored near the Philippines, it's still too early to confirm if they will develop into typhoons. The forecast also indicates the possible formation of a tropical convergence zone in the East Sea in late September, which could lead to further storm activity. It is estimated that between 6-8 storms or tropical depressions could impact the East Sea from now until the end of 2024, with 3-4 potentially making landfall in Vietnam. The influence of La Nina could worsen the situation, leading to a series of storms and subsequent flooding in Central Vietnam in late 2024, potentially extending into early 2025. Meanwhile, Northern Vietnam is still coping with the aftermath of the strongest storm in 30 years. Although Typhoon YAGI has weakened, heavy rains continue, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides. Yen Bai may be flooded again, many places are at high risk of landslides The Thao River in Yen Bai has reached 31.13 m, exceeding alert level two as of 6:00 p.m. on October 1, with projections for an increase above alert level three within 6-12 hours. Areas such as Yen Ninh, Hong Ha, and Tuy Loc are at high risk of flooding, with depths expected between 0.3-1.5 m. Quyet Tien village has already experienced flooding. Heavy rainfall since September 28, driven by wind convergence, has led to rapid floodwater rise, with some regions receiving over 320 mm in just 24 hours. In response, the Phong Chau pontoon bridge was temporarily closed due to rising floodwaters on the Red River, after a brief period of operation. Landslides in Van Ban district have caused significant damage, affecting six houses and prompting the evacuation of 67 households. Erosion has disrupted transportation routes, and evacuations are ongoing in landslide-prone areas. Nationwide, 408 communes are at risk, primarily in Yen Bai, Lao Cai, and Ha Giang, where the risk level is assessed at two. Recent flash floods in Ha Giang have resulted in fatalities, injuries, and ongoing searches for missing individuals. Additionally, over 22,400 homes in Yen Bai have been impacted by severe flooding following Typhoon Yagi, marking the highest flood peak on the Thao River since 1968. #AsiaRisk #NaturalDisasters #Vietnam Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gAsB8aFB
