I am extremely honoured to be elected as a Fellow by Institution of Mechanical Engineers and have been fortunate to have worked with some incredible engineers over the years that I have learnt so much from (each day still remains a school day, as the saying goes) - were I to list them I doubt anyone would reach the end of this post! But I would like to acknowledge my colleagues in Pipeline Integrity Engineers (PIE) Ltd. and the incredible teamwork that we have, to deliver so many complex studies and innovation projects to our clients over the years - Nikki Barker Andy Fuller CEng Tony Stonehewer Barry Dalus Graham Goodfellow Chris Lyons. And especially to Jane Haswell, who I have known and worked with for most of my career, and given that she has always been professionalism personified, I count myself very lucky. This seems a natural time to briefly reflect my personal story, so here it is! Leaving school at 16, I knew there was so much I didn’t know about engineering, but it intrigued me and I knew I wanted to know more. So I commenced a 4yr craft apprenticeship, which taught me so much about the practicalities of engineering, whilst going to college on day-release to learn all of those wonderful theories that I thought I would probably never need (I was wrong). A few years later I saw an ad for a 6 month temporary technician vacancy at this weird sounding place, British Gas Engineering Research Station (ERS). And I was still there 10yrs later when it eventually closed… And this is something about chance I guess, and you really don’t know what may be heading your way. And I hit the jackpot, as I didn’t realise at the time it was a world class centre of excellence for anything to do with natural gas systems. If you ever wondered: - why are populated areas limited to 0.3 df rather than 0.25 or 0.35. Or, - Why was linepipe material toughness set at 27J, rather than 20J or 40J? Or, - Where was the first UK high resolution ILI tool developed? Or, - Where were the tests conducted to allow us to calculate the safe pressure for defects? Much more, and the answer to all of the above is ERS - so I was so lucky to work there. Next step was to join the operational arm of the business (Transco), and again I was fortunate to work in a great Lead team for transmission - which was invaluable in understanding operational issues and trying to manage them! And after another reorganisation I left and joined PIE with Jane and Phil Jones - where I have been the past great 23yrs, and there is far too much to say on that for this post, so I won’t even try! So much has changed from when I started my journey at 16, but guess what, once thing hasn’t - I still know there is so much I don’t know about engineering, but it still intrigues me and I know I want to know more. So that’s my abridged story (and to everyone who got this far well done, I owe you a beverage of your choosing!) and best wishes to all of you, wherever you are in your journey - do enjoy!

Responsible Charge: What Exactly Does It Mean? The National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) defines Responsible Charge as the “direct control and personal supervision of engineering work.” This may lead some to wonder how much the Professional Engineer can rely on the work of an Engineer Intern. The Engineer of Record is a Professional Engineer who seals drawings or documents for a project. The seal of the Engineer of Record acknowledges that a professional engineer prepared and coordinated or had subordinates or Engineering Interns prepare the files under the direct supervision of the professional engineer. The company "Klaipeda Maritime Cargo Company" (KLASCO) was visited by a group of students from Klaipėda State College. Future electrical and automation and mechanical engineers came in search of practice and a potential place to work. During the study visit, visitors learned about klasco's plans for the future of activities, accompanied by the heads of the Technical and Energy Departments and engineers, visited the Smeltė peninsula, where the offshore wind turbine loading project is being developed. The students and their accompanying head of the Department of Engineering and Informatics Daiva Stanelytė were delighted with the opportunity to see the most modern loading techniques up close, to climb to the workplace of the operator of the new mobile port crane "Liebherr". During the visit, a dry cargo port was also visited, where there is a wide variety of loading works and equipment, as well as other port cranes. The most enduring ones climbed into the control cabin of the largest crane. For electrical automation, it was especially interesting to see a modern electrical substation, a centralized charging control panel. At the end of the meeting, D. Stanelytė said that she has no doubt that there will be more than one who wants to return here as an intern, and after graduation – as an employee. Indrė Varkulevičienė, Head of Personnel and Administration at KLASCO, says that the shortage of engineering specialists in Lithuania has approached a critical threshold. Undoubtedly, these are some of the most promising professions of our time. "We highly value cooperation and partnership with the community of Klaipėda State College, we constantly "exchange" visits to each other, discuss possible joint projects. Despite all the efforts, the biggest trouble is the competitive environment in the market. Students make no secret of the fact that they can do internships even in several companies. Therefore, our team prepares very carefully for such visits. Thinks over every detail, where and what can interest students, what can be tried in practice. And there is nothing to hide here - at the end of his stay, one student admitted that he liked KLASCO the most compared to other companies he visited! For this, the teams of the Technical and Energy Departments should be thanked, who with great dedication and involvement contribute to attracting new colleagues," said I. Varkulevičienė.

#PLANT OPERATIONS Hi there, how are you doing today, I trust you are good. I've been sharing my internship experience for days now. I hope you've learnt something about the process industry. And for today's piece, I'd like to share what it's like to be a process engineer. What's expected of process engineers So process engineering in summary process/convert raw materials to finished product (meeting the client specification) at optimum condition (best operating parameters/rates with no environmental impact to minimize cost and maximize profit) As such the process engineers are obliged with duty to ensure that the process parameters don't deviate from the normal trend. Basically we have the panel/DCS operations, plant operations and servicing operations. The panel operations involve monitoring of process parameter trends to regulate the process to the design specifications. starting and shutting down remote equipment, opening and closing of control valves, log taking and tuning of the final elements etc. Field operations can be very tasty as you have to walk and climb platforms to execute jobs unlike the panel where you sit and monitor system screens Field operators record log books, close and open valves, start up equipment or give signals for start up to the panel, carry out daily plant routine activities, prepare sites prior maintenance, check for equipment working conditions. The #LLF (Look, Listen and Feel) method is employed by field operators to ascertain the working condition of equipment. This is all for today🤗 hope learnt a thing or two? Like, comment about the industry and share for others to learn. Meanwhile the picture👇 is the world largest gate #valve. #et's_Process_Series_12 #GasProcessing #InternshipExperience #EnergyIndustry #CareerGrowth

As a former DNV Global Technical Trainee i totally agree, the hands on experience and learning from experienced colleagues is invaluable.
Once a surveyor, always a surveyor Today, as I was changing to winter tires wearing my old DNV boilersuit, I couldn’t help but reflect on my time working as a surveyor. It was a tough job—physically demanding, mentally challenging, and never boring. Each day presented new problems, and I had the chance to meet some incredibly interesting people. Surveying taught me the value of hands-on experience. There's something powerful about learning through real-world challenges. While theory and classroom learning are important, nothing beats the lessons you learn in the field. For anyone considering a career in engineering, I highly recommend seeking out trainee positions with companies like DNV. The exposure, skills, and connections you’ll gain will be invaluable.
