Big Takeaways from Yesterday's Cardiac Care Discussion in Ethiopia I had a powerful afternoon learning about the current state and future of cardiac care in Ethiopia! Huge thanks to YETENA WEG | የጤና ወግ Ethiopian Society of Cardiac Professionals MaxHealth for organizing this insightful session. The session began with a powerful presentation by the renowned Dr. Bekele Alemayehu (my and many cardiologists' icon). He unpacked the critical challenges of PCI in Ethiopia: limited access, high costs, delayed patient arrival, supply shortages, and a lack of both public awareness and government recognition. He also proposed solutions like: increased ministerial focus, public health education campaigns, and engaging pharmaceutical companies to improve the continuous supply of consumables. Adding to the urgency, there's a staggering backlog of over 14,000 patients waiting for cardiac intervention at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital alone. The future holds immense potential! Advancements showcased by 3 speakers from MAX Health Care highlight a 20-year gap Ethiopia needs to bridge. From minimally invasive cardiac surgery to percutaneous interventions for structural heart disease to innovative cardiac resynchronization therapies, the possibilities are vast. The Time to Act is Now: Public awareness campaigns and efficient referral systems are crucial to ensure Ethiopians recognize symptoms and seek early intervention. We must advocate for a more inclusive healthcare system, particularly in public hospitals where essential supplies are often scarce. This session sparked a fire within me. Let's work together to push for progress and ensure Ethiopians have access to the advanced cardiac care they deserve. #EthiopianHealthcare #CardiacCare #PublicHealth

Our first peer-reviewed study! We showed how remote monitoring greatly improves clinical outcomes and costs of care for congestive heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction, in part, by using their routinely collected physiologic data to prescribe and titrate four crucial drugs. #cardiology #heartfailure #physicians #medicine
In a newly published manuscript in the Journal of Cardiac Failure, comprehensive remote patient monitoring and care improved clinical outcomes and reduced total cost of care in heart failure patients. Dr. David I. Feldman, cardiovascular medicine fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital and first author on the manuscript, shares of the results: "Our usual way of caring for heart failure patients isn't working. We need to consider all options when it comes to maximizing GDMT and helping patients with heart failure live longer, healthier lives. Collaboration with a centralized RPM program to optimize GDMT titration efforts is a necessary and impactful solution to help close heart failure care gaps and improve outcomes at scale." A new study by University of Birmingham has shown that a targeted training programme for healthcare professionals can improve part of the care of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), a common heart rhythm disorder. The STEEER-AF cluster-randomised trial was presented last weekend at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress 2024 in a hotline session. Led by Professor Dipak Kotecha, the study found that adherence to existing AF treatment guidelines was generally low across Europe. However, a short, structured educational programme for healthcare professionals led to a 51% improvement in guideline adherence for heart rhythm control, although not a significant improvement for stroke prevention. Improved adherence to guidelines means better care and outcomes for patients with AF. 🌟 Daily Dose of Health Insights July 2🌟 🔹 Today's Highlight: Canadian Medical Team Achieves Breakthrough in Organ Transplant Technique "A medical team in London, Ontario, has achieved a Canadian first with a groundbreaking technique that enhances the viability of donor organs, offering new hope for transplant patients. The procedure, called abdominal normothermic regional perfusion (A-NRP), pumps blood to abdominal organs after circulatory death, re-oxygenating and warming them to minimize damage. Led by Dr. Anton Skaro at the Lawson Health Research Institute, this technique has the potential to significantly increase the number of organ transplants in Canada by protecting organs from damage after circulatory death. The team successfully used A-NRP for the first time in Canada on April 10, optimizing organs from two donors and enabling the transplantation of two kidneys and two livers. The next step is to scale up the method to include thoracic organs such as the heart and lungs." 🔎 Why Stay Updated? In the rapidly evolving field of healthcare, staying informed is crucial. Congratulations to our cardiology researchers who have recruited more patients into a multinational heart trial than months they have been open as a recruiting site ❤️ Interventional Cardiologist Dr Aetesam-ur-Rahman and Clinical Trials Assistant Franek Skalbania received special commendation for their success in recruiting patients into the EASY-AS trial. The study, which is being funded by the British Heart Foundation in the UK, is looking to find out whether early heart valve replacement leads to better outcomes after five years in patients with aortic stenosis. Once concluded, the findings could change the way patients with #aortic stenosis are treated. Aortic stenosis is a common and serious heart problem, which causes the heart valve to narrow and not fully open. Symptoms include shortness of breath and chest pain. The Sheffield team are one of 100 cardiology sites across the globe taking part in the trial. We're hugely excited for Temple Health – Temple University Health System to join our ThinkSono U.S clinical trial. They are joining forces with NYU Langone Health who are also participating. Temple University Health System (Temple Health) is a $2.6 billion academic health system dedicated to providing access to quality patient care and supporting excellence in medical education and research. We're lucky to be working with the world's foremost experts in DVT, including Parth Rali, MD, FCCP (Associate Professor), who is leading this work at Temple Health. Special thanks to Giancarlo Speranza, who helped set up the site. As a medical technology startup, ThinkSono is committed to building the most sophisticated but also rigorously tested AI technology on the planet. This means collaborating with every stakeholder, from the world's leading clinicians, hospital systems and of course regulators to make sure we serve patients needs. For more context about DVT: "DVT, a condition in which blood clots develop in veins, can lead to potentially fatal complications like the spread of blood clots to the heart and lungs (known as pulmonary embolism) as well as debilitating long-term swelling and pain of the legs (called post-thrombotic syndrome). According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, DVT affects up to 900,000 Americans every year and is common in hospitalized patients. DVT is also a significant driver of healthcare costs, costing the US healthcare system up to $10 billion each year. Prompt diagnosis of blood clots is extremely important. The ThinkSono technology leverages real-time AI-powered guidance during point-of-care ultrasound to potentially detect DVT more quickly, accurately, and cost-effectively compared to traditional methods." Note: ThinkSono Guidance is not yet FDA cleared/CE marked. Contact hello@thinksono.com for more information. https://lnkd.in/gw6YF4WZ

The Top-Ranked Heart Hospitals in the Rocky Mountain Region: No hospitals in the Rocky Mountain region made the 2023-24 U.S. News & World Report top 50 list, but 3 hospitals in the region scored more than 45 out of 100 in the survey. The three top-ranked heart hospitals in the Rocky Mountain region were: UCHealth UColorado Hospital (Aurora, CO), St. Luke's Health System (Boise, ID), and Intermountain Health (Utah). In the 23-24 U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) survey of American hospitals, nearly 780 hospitals were rated for their effectiveness at delivering care to adult heart patients. The hospitals surveyed were scored on various measures related to heart patient outcomes, the breadth of their heart program and services, and the amount of recognition earned by these hospitals from their peers within the cardiology community. In the 23-24 survey, a score of at least 59.1 out of 100 was required to earn a spot among the top 50 ranked U.S. hospitals for adult heart care. For more insight into the metrics used to rate heart hospitals in the 23-24 USNWR survey, or to find the cardiology rating of other hospitals in the Rocky Mountain region, visit Best Hospitals for Adult Cardiology Care and Heart Surgery: https://lnkd.in/gXm9iWY #cardiology #hearthospital #cardiaccare
