MARITIME SHIPPING. Getting together with insiders of maritime shipping this week was a delightful experience. The get-together was marvelously hosted at one of Amsterdam's very oldest maritime trading houses. Among a select group of individuals including shipyard owners, shipbuilders, maritime brokers, and those, like myself, who are simply enamored with maritime affairs, we looked back on the progress made and the progress that lies ahead in the future in terms of maritime shipping. Fond memories of my childhood flooded back, with miniature models of real ships adorning our home—a subtle nod to those who share a similar nostalgia (if you know, you know 😉). Maritime shipping continues to be a linchpin in global trade, with ships facilitating the transport of approximately 80-90% of the world's goods. Reflecting on history, we're reminded of the pivotal role maritime trade played, particularly in the era of free trade with the Americas, in terms of consumer goods and luxury items. Personally, I hold a particular fondness for the 18th-century frigate—a nimble and sturdy three-masted vessel capable of weathering even the harshest seas. The thought of such ships crossing the Atlantic, a journey that typically took about twenty days, fills, at least myself, with awe! #MaritimeShipping #Shipping #Naval #Amsterdam #History #Trading

🇬🇧🇫🇷 I am thankful to Their Excellencies Rosie Seville and Marine de Carné-Trécesson, who respectively represent the United Kingdom and France for welcoming the Franco-British Council's Franco British Young Leaders - Avenir Franco Britannique (Young and Local Leaders Alumni) to the International Maritime Organization in London. It was fascinating to learn about the wide range of issues being addressed at the IMO, including dark fleets, the welfare of seafarers, autonomous shipping, fuel innovations, and decarbonisation efforts. Unlike other United Nations specialised agencies, voting power at the IMO is determined by the size of a Member State’s fleet. As a result, countries that hold significant influence in other fora may not always have the same sway here. It was therefore encouraging to note the presence of a European Union coordination committee, which ensures common positions are presented, alongside the strong bond of partnership between France and the United Kingdom. It’s promising to think this bond may grow even closer in the months to come. As two nations with a rich maritime heritage, shared values, and aligned interests, and whose common link is the Channel, it was reassuring to witness the strength of our Franco-British partnership.

National Maritime Day National Maritime Day celebrates the sea, the people of the sea and the incredible effect it has had on the lives and well-being of humanity. Just to start with the most basic point, maritime trade has been the largest cargo carrier in the history of the world. In fact, even the land-based parts of the Silk Road did not see as much cargo and commercial goods moving along it as the oceans and seas. Today marks the World Maritime Day 2024, organised by International Maritime Organization to highlight the importance of maritime activities and the contributions of the maritime industry to global development. Stats to note: around 90% of goods are carried over the waves, onboard the global fleet of 118 928 merchant vessels. As little as 10 years ago, most ships sailed without a consistent internet connection. But even today, the poor access to internet across much of the global fleet prevails, while as much as 13% of the global merchant fleet has no internet access at all (report by Idwal). PCS - Port Community Systems is a multi-user system for automatic data exchange between shipping lines and port services in order to speed up the registration of arrival, parking, departure of ships, as well as customs clearance of goods. On April 25, 2024, IMO published Guidelines on port community systems FAL.5/Circ.54. Which presents the basic principles for the harmonization, standardization and interoperability of various private and public commercial and maritime information exchange systems, including the "single window" environment, as I wrote earlier. It will be useful for those who are "Onshore" and who are interested in how the port works. I also attach supporting publications from open sources to the guide.
