In our current series, we are introducing our project's public deliverables - their aim, impact, and the future steps they are the building blocks of. 💡 EOSC4Cancer's Deliverable 2.1 gives an overview of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the key datasets in EOSC4Cancer, and describes what steps would be appropriate to improve these SOPs. This deliverable is authored by Work Package 2 partners EMBL, Lygature, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, and Erasmus MC. They are collaborating towards developing data harmonization efforts to make cancer research more reproducible across all Member States. New findings from large-scale scientific equipment trigger innovations and help to tackle social challenges. The program "ErUM-Pro" by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung aims to fast forward new applications from this basic research. Three projects at DESY have received funding within this program. Two of these projects, explore new technologies and solutions from physics for health research - cancer radiation therapy and the development of compact accelerators for health applications - one focusses on the development of analytical methods for industrial needs. 🩻 Taking cancer treatment to the next level Back in 2019, two former CERN physicists (#CERNAlumni) embarked on a journey to revolutionise proton therapy. Today, Terapet SA, a #medtech #startup aiming to improve #cancertreatment has a team of 15 people and has raised 11MCHF in total. With the support of external funding for the R&D collaboration with CERN funded by the Innosuisse Innovation Project Fund, TERAPET has made significant strides in developing innovative medical devices that utilise CERN’s expertise in scintillating crystals. This collaboration culminated in the creation of Qualyscan, their first product now ready for commercialisation, demonstrating the powerful synergy between high-energy physics and #medicalinnovation. Proton therapy, known for its precision, has traditionally relied solely on simulations for treatment planning, leaving doctors uncertain about the exact location of proton impact inside the patient. Today I presented our team’s work on learning using weakly labeled datasets for cell segmentation at the #SPIEMedicalImaging conference. By leveraging adapted target losses, we are able to utilize nucleus centers annotations and nucleus segmentations for the segmentation of whole-cell instances. This allows us to increase the available training data and results in an overall improvement of model accuracy.   Tomorrow I will present a poster on our work showcasing an innovative, almost entirely annotation- and hypothesis-free method for discovering predictive cancer biomarkers candidates from cell phenotypes using self-supervised learning and clustering. This work has the potential to accelerate biomarker discovery, by identifying novel biomarkers, and offering valuable insights towards treatment selection.   Looking forward to meeting the rest of the attendees at my poster.
