Will and self-discipline
It does not take strong will and self-discipline to pursue and push for things you like!
It is when you encounter suffering and pain during the journey that “will and self-discipline” are tested. How long can you endure? How long are you willing to endure a painful journey that does not satiate and gratify soon enough; when victory, success and material rewards are not even promised?
So often, you find yourself in an extreme absence of good productive options. And while we all love to listen to Steve Job’s story of his heroic struggle, he was somewhat lucky! He said so himself. He was doing what he loved to do!
But not everyone is fortunate enough to have a chance to do what they love to do! Many of us are stuck with sub-optimal options; and thus, must simply tackle the bare essentials that confront us! It is during this grim moments when life-changing decisions have to be made that your will and resolve are tested!
You instinctively know that success in life comes only at the cost of suffering and pain; of sacrificing your best efforts and your best goods for a future good that may (or may not happen) at some future time you cannot ascertain.
So you implore a powerful being to intercede for you and deflect those possible future harm and malevolence from discounting your personal efforts towards greater harvests, favorable fish catches, safe productive hunts; or, favorable entrepreneurial outcomes.
It is not a plea for the gods to do some hard lifting for you because gods do not do this sort of nonsense! Deep down you truly believe that good things will pan out in exchange of your willing sacrifice and voluntary acceptance of the suffering, deprivation, discomfort and pain throughout your journey.
Sacrifice has to be voluntary; not a forced circumstance that you resent! And if suffering is bestowed upon you by life’s random mess? Oh yes, it may be an unfortunate circumstance that you find yourself in… but to have positive merit, it must be serenely accepted and owned!
