A newsletter subscriber recently asked me what I thought would be the biggest sports business story for the NFL over the next five years. Here is my answer... The biggest NFL story over the next few years will be a schedule redesign. Roger Goodell has already publicly talked about adding an 18th regular season game. He will accomplish this by shortening the preseason, adding an extra bye week, and extending the playoffs (so the Super Bowl falls on a 3-day weekend). This will have to be negotiated with the players through the NFLPA. But the players will agree to it because they split revenue 50-50 with the league, meaning if the NFL makes more money, they make more money, too. I also don't think it's a coincidence that the renegotiation of the next CBA coincides with the date the NFL can opt out of its media rights deal. And when you combine an 18-game regular season with all the one-off, special inventory that the NFL has built over the last few years (Christmas Day, Black Friday, etc.), my guess is that the NFL is looking at another $100 billion payday. With my beloved Miami Dolphins playing in 10 minutes, I can’t help but keep thinking about the NFL’s decision to broadcast the game solely on Peacock. For this not aware, the Miami Dolphins play the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL playoffs, and it’s the first time an NFL playoff game will be aired on a streaming app Let’s break down the costs: Peacock paid the NFL $110 Million for the exclusive rights to the game, and the game only can be viewed if you have a Peacock membership For those who don’t subscribe, they’ll have to pay the $5.99 for a 1 month subscription to the game I, don’t have a membership, but as I have no interest in the streaming service outside of the game, I will not renew after the month ____________________________ To the business side, Peacock’s goal must be to convert users to continue to subscribe (or in all reality, will be banking on those who forget to cancel their subscription.) The average viewership for NFL playoff games is 15 Million people, so assuming 20% of the audience has Peacock, the other 12M paying $5.99 gets them to ~ $70M for just those tuning into the game (~65% to their investment) However, it will be interesting to see how many people tune in because of the “paywall” I’d imagine they will have some serious churn following the game Do you think this was a good decision for the NFL or Peacock? Go Phins!

It showcases Football's enduring appeal and revenue potential, even when no games are played: ⚡ 300'000+ fans and $200m in economic impact expected in Detroit across 3 days ⚡ 11m+ viewers expected to tune in for the first round of the draft, on par with NBA finals and Masters ratings ⚡ 54m+ unduplicated viewers will tune in from April 25-27 Scouting Combine, Free Agency, Draft, Training Camp, Pre-Season, Season Opener; at every point in the year the NFL gives its fans something to anticipate and talk about. Other sports properties should take note of how the NFL manages to consistently stay relevant and monetize that attention. With the increased economic value the NFL Draft generates for a host city, I would not be shocked if the NFL found a way to leverage that power and open up additional revenue streams.💰 For more details, check out the full piece and enjoy the read! (incl. how the draft process is technically illegal under U.S. antitrust laws)😄 Thanks for your support and stay tuned for more 🙌 #nfl #nfldraft #football #sportbusiness #sport #collegefootball
