That's a wrap! Thank you to everyone who came to learn more about Oshen last Friday at the IET in London😊. Here's the most popular questions we were asked, and our answers: --- Q: How do we know what sea state the micro-vessels can last in? A: We've tested in up to 25kt constant winds, 40kt gusts, and sea states just beyond the 'small craft warning'⛵ that indicates our 25ft chase boat should no longer be at sea (On the rougher end of 'Moderate' for people familiar with the shipping forecast). When we have a larger fleet later this year we look forward to taking bigger risks with individual micro-vessels and sending them on more challenging missions! --- Q: Have we considered magnetic couplers? A: Yes, especially as it could preserve the mast mechanism if the sail experienced shock loads in harsh conditions (e.g from a breaking wave 🌊). However, our main design ethos is simplicity, and we're going with a simpler design at present that maintains high spring stiffness🪢in the mast while ensuring it's not brittle. --- Q: What other applications could the micro-vessels have? A: In the talk, we covered our most immediate work on Biodiversity monitoring with a focus on protected species observations with DEFRA🐬(more details on this later this month!). This is a big R&D focus for us at the moment, so expect a lot of information about using our micro-vessels for cetacean monitoring in coming months. However, there are other applications of our micro-vessel technology: MetOcean data for more accurate forecasts⛈️, visual observations for Maritime Domain Awareness, low-power oceanographic sensors for scientific research 🧪... if you'd to know more, get in touch! There is a list a mile long of technology assisted work in the modern world which I take for granted. But every Wisconsin winter I am reminded and amazed by the now common act of snowplowing. Big trucks (not uncomplicated pieces of machinery) operated by people who will often work for a day straight which make it possible for me to continue my day as normal, and in less than 24 hours forget the storm even happened. Thank you to all of the snow plow drivers, the truck manufacturers, mechanics and every other person and piece of the puzzle which makes that happen. How about you? Emotional resonance builds rapport, but for a deeper bond, the brain releases oxytocin, the "bonding hormone," in face-to-face interactions. Dopamine, the brain's reward chemical, adds feelings of pleasure and satisfaction to this shared connection. However, in today's world, screen time overstimulates our brains with frequent dopamine surges from notifications, social media, and endless scrolling. This artificially high dopamine release leads to a crash, making real-world interactions feel less rewarding by comparison. Over time, this desensitisation reduces our motivation for in-person connections—those crucial interactions that release oxytocin and solidify deeper bonds. The takeaway? Reducing screen time and prioritising real-world connections will help restore emotional resonance, enhance oxytocin release, and improve both relationships and well-being. In my last post here which got over +8000 impressions (😯), I mentioned to be back to share some bits from some side projects I've been working quietly in the corner. And here I am, between "You should be proud" and "Man... really?!"; announcing the first post of my writing series. After many hours of brainstorm and burned brain cells, I chose the title "Trail to Thrive" for this series, resembling the life journey we are on, knowing I am not the only one on the way, some behind and many ahead. My goal is to share my learnings on certain topics that I outlined in my post, some through testing proven tools and concepts out there and some through sweet and/or bitter personal experiences on the way, hoping to trigger an easy action (where needed) to create a positive change regardless of scale/magnitude. It is practically very challenging to calculate this ratio for all of them. Is there a solution to this problem? 🤔 Yes, there is! I'd like to introduce you to an application called "Screener", which fully automates this process. By adding a formula in Screener, you can automatically calculate any ratio for any company. For the PEPS ratio, you can use the following formula in Screener: (Current Price - Book Value) / EPS This will enable you to easily calculate the PEPS ratio for any company.
