For those with a Tuesday morning commute, this interview is certainly eye opening. One thing about the Steward Health debacle is the sale of the physician group. Rumor has it Optum is poking around in this mess. Patients, nurses, physicians, and communities are probably feeling helpless and out of control as this whole mess unfolds. Physicians and nurses need to go the Massachusetts capitol and make it known that trading a PE disaster for a for profit arm of UHG is not a winning strategy. Keep it local and regional. Hospitals are supposed to be an anchor of healthcare provision in communities. How did we get to this point? Where are we going? Do we keep letting corporate mindsets and greed simply destroy communities and the lives of those who provide the care--namely the nurses, physicians, pharmacists, social workers, techs, and other support staff who signed up for careers to make a difference? PE has no business in healthcare. None.

The NHS workforce plan details the government's strategy to fill the 112,000 vacant positions within the service. Unintended consequences of EHR “updates and improvements “ are all around us. Whether it is confronting a step that adds 2 minutes and 10 keystrokes to sign in or a documentation requirement that’s irrelevant outside an age range or clinical situation, healthcare leaders can increase engagement and frontline worker trust by asking the question: “How can we help YOU by getting rid of the stupid stuff?”. Stupid stuff is NOT just in clinical IT. The whole idea of LEAN was about getting rid of WASTE. 🤮You need a GROSS leader.🤮 Getting Rid of Stupid Stuff is a perspective on healthcare work started at Hawaii Pacific Health after its leaders listened to their frontline workers who'd spent years documenting "stupid stuff." 🫵 Example: a nurse was required to document a teenager's umbilical stump (it falls off when you're a baby) because they hadn't removed the field from showing up for all pediatric patients. We almost NEVER take away work in healthcare — we only add to it. We need every organization to adopt a mindset of "Do we *really* need this? How could we take it away?" My Monday message as you American Nurses Association - California President is to help highlight that August is national civic health awareness month! There’s still time to plan events at your organization if it’s not already happening. It is also a great month to double check that you are registered to vote or that your registration for voting is updated with your current address. And spread the word to all your friends and family. The right to vote is a right we never want to lose…and as nurses we can stress the impact of civic health!

It is hard for children to try something new when they are afraid of failing. Teaching your child that it is okay to make mistakes can provide your child the opportunity to try a new challenge and build their confidence. Helping your child to understand that it is the effort they put in to trying something new or different that is important rather than the final result. Encourage your child to change their self-talk from “I can’t do that, I quit” to “I can’t do that YET — but with practice I’ll get there”.
