The Chancellor recently announced the “most ambitious productivity review ever undertaken by government”. For the 2023 REAL challenge lecture, Professor Dame Diane Coyle, Bennett Professor of Public Policy at the University of Cambridge, explored some of the key drivers of UK healthcare productivity and discussed what we might hope the NHS will look like when it reaches its centenary. A golden opportunity for me to share the fact that NHS Knowledge and Library teams can play a key role in supporting improved productivity, sharing evidence on changed ways of working that make a difference to the quality of care, save time and impact the bottom line. They bring the Gift of Time to the NHS - delivering an economic benefit of 1:2.4 for starters, increasing to 1:3.85 where knowledge specialists search and summarise evidence for their healthcare colleagues. "Public health professionals, much like their counterparts in nursing, dedicate their lives to the well-being of others. While nursing is revered and consistently celebrated as one of the most trusted professions, public health professionals are often not recognized for their efforts. The irony lies in the fact that while nurses are hailed as "healthcare heroes”, especially in times of crisis, public health professionals remain the “unsung heroes”, their work often invisible to the public eye yet indispensable to the public’s health. When I transitioned from a nursing culture known for "eating their young" to the public health field, I left behind a well-paying and highly respected role for a sector where being overworked, underpaid, undervalued, and underappreciated is, unfortunately, all too common. Despite these challenges, passion, dedication, and deep commitment to improving health and well-being remain the driving forces in both nursing and public health. These professions are bound by a shared mission to care for others, yet they are also united by the systemic challenges that erode morale and hinder our ability to make a difference. Click to register-->https://lnkd.in/eQg-x3ic Why are we working so hard to pass new legislation? 1.     Modernization: An update of our antiquated statutes and regulations are needed to better reflect the current landscape of PA practice. This initiative seeks to alleviate administrative burdens and enhance access to care to Marylanders. 2.     Team-Based Practice: While PAs are not advocating for independent practice, we believe the traditional model of a single physician supervising a PA needs reevaluation. In today's healthcare environment, PAs often operate within multi-disciplinary teams led by physicians, collaborating with various healthcare professionals rather than relying on a single supervisor. 3.     No Change in Scope: We intend to align a Physician assistant’s scope of practice to their skills and education. Additionally, we aim to hold PAs accountable for their care, similar to other licensed and regulated healthcare professionals in Maryland. The outdated practice laws significantly impede our ability to provide Maryland residents with timely, safe, and appropriate care.
