Because at $19.99 per pack, Opill will be out of reach for many people - especially those who face the most barriers to access due to systemic inequities. If you've got insurance, you might get reimbursed through flexible spending or health savings accounts. Despite the price tag, having over-the-counter access is a “HUGE victory” towards health autonomy per our Director of Reproductive Justice Initiatives Zsanai Epps, MPH, CHES. In 2010, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) emerged as a ray of hope for the sixty-four million women in the United States now entitled to no-cost preventive services. With their health insurance, it promised no-cost access to birth control, a vital component of health care.  This pledge was a significant milestone in the struggle for affordable contraception. No-cost contraception empowers people to make informed choices about their reproductive health, enhancing their educational opportunities, career prospects and economic stability. It also saves money. Contraceptives are a miracle of science and instrumental to our freedom to choose if, when, and how we have our families. Yet, we must also confront the racial and social inequities that continue to limit access for marginalized communities. Disparities in healthcare access disproportionately impact BIPOC, as well as low-income individuals, creating barriers to obtaining the contraceptive care they want. These inequities are rooted in systemic challenges—from lack of affordable healthcare to geographic limitations in underserved communities. It is our responsibility as health care advocates to address these gaps, ensuring equitable access to contraception for everyone, regardless of race, income, or location. Reproductive autonomy should not be a luxury for the privileged few—it is a human right. We need comprehensive policies that prioritize equity and inclusivity, ensuring contraception is accessible, affordable, and free of stigma for all communities, and over-the-counter birth control like Opill could be transformative to make this a reality. On #WorldContraceptionDay, let's commit to dismantling the barriers that continue to stand in the way of contraceptive care for so many.
