How do you achieve great things? Surround yourself with people who inspire you. This weekend, Culinary Care's first-ever Bank of America Chicago Marathon team will cross the finish line. For many people, the idea of fundraising is scarier than running the 26.2 miles. But, these five runners, have collectively raised over $12,000 to help make nourishment a lasting and integral part of cancer care, so that no one has to go through treatment hungry or alone. You don't have to be a runner to feel inspired by this community. 👉 When I'm not feeling 100%, I think of these runners and how they had to train on days when they weren't feeling 100%. 👉 When I'm getting in my head about fundraising, I think of how these runners got out of their comfort zones and asked their friends & family for donations (and they're not even done yet!). In this film, a #collaboration between the Timothy Syndrome Alliance (TSA) and Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd, we explore the importance of connections between individuals and families with #livedexperience of #CACNA1C-related disorders (CRDs) and #TimothySyndrome (TS), academics, clinical teams and researchers. What does DEI mean for a rare disease nonprofit organization? On our mission to raise awareness, provide support, and fund research for multiple system atrophy, we know we need to embrace DEI principles in strategic and operational planning. To prepare for our upcoming board meeting, I recently read Minal Bopaiah's "Equity: How to Design Organizations Where Everyone Thrives." Bopaiah adeptly explains basic concepts, underscores equity's critical role, and emphasizes that equity is essential if organizations want to leverage differences for a more significant impact. One of my takeaways: we need to add an A for Accessibility (IDEA). Accessibility is especially relevant to this community, where the disease robs you of speech, mobility, and more. I'm eager to learn more about DEI within disease-focused nonprofits. Several people in my network are doing exciting work in this space–Axelle Ahanhanzo, Lisa Colledge, Yuli Kim (she/her), Elliott Parris–maybe there are more? What are the must-reads and must-follows as a board member in the rare disease nonprofit space? Are any (nonprofit) organizations doing this exceptionally well? Hi There, I hope and trust all is well with you. Our annual fundraiser for the MS Society- Bike MS Bay to Bay Tour is this weekend. The Bike MS Bay to Bay 2024, a 150k two day bicycle ride to raise awareness and funds that support those living with Multiple Sclerosis ("MS") and also for cutting edge research that will lead to a Cure. Over the years Awareness, Treatment, Diagnosis, Research and knowledge about this disease has advanced exponentially. Resulting an improved life for people living with the disease and our community as well. I won't be alone. I lead an incredible extended family or as we like to call "Teamily" (team + family) that share a passion to serve, pay it forward and do good. (And have a little fun too!) Our group has grown. The first year we were 3 people and raised US$1100K. This weekend we will be 72 strong and have raised over US$160K to date. A few observations on what has contributed to where we are today. You may already know and practice these but here they are for your consideration and that hopefully you may find useful: • Invest in People - Happy, confident, trusting, inclusive and fulfilled people will enhance the experience for all. • Incorporate the concept of a Servant/Mentorship mindset into the entire Culture - Share with, encourage and support everyone. • Embrace change and thus resilience.
