Day 20/31 Kids and Internet Safety On the Internet, you can find information about almost anything. However, when it comes to your children’s online activities, you need to make sure they’re protected against contact with undesirable people, inappropriate or harmful content and malicious software or attacks. Learning a few online safety tips for kids can help keep them safe. How to Keep your Child Safe Online 1. Set Ground Rules: Have honest conversations with your children about who they communicate with and how, and who can see what they post online. Set custom screen time limits, enable the web filter, and block inappropriate apps and websites from the remote parental dashboard. 2. Use technology to protect them: Check that your child’s device is always updated and running the latest software, and that privacy settings are on and configured to minimize data collection so that people don’t see any information that you don’t want them to see. 3. Spend time with them online: Create opportunities for your child to have safe and positive online interactions with friends, family and you. Connecting with others can be an excellent opportunity for you to model kindness and empathy in virtual interactions. 4. Let them have fun: Encourage your child to use resources on the internet to help them get up and get moving, like online exercise videos for children and video games that require physical movement. 5. Install a parental control app: Choose an app that’s compatible with all your kids’ devices. In today’s digital age, capturing a special family moment is as easy as tapping your screen—and sometimes so is sharing it with the world. With every photo we snap, it’s important to remember that we have the power to control who sees it and where it goes. And it’s very likely your child will need guidance here. Whether your child has complete access to today’s breadth of mobile apps or a phone reserved solely for calls and texts, practicing good digital safety as a family can go a long way in protecting the images of both you and your child. Here are three essential steps for keeping photos private and secure: 🔐 Use strong passwords: A strong, unique password is your first line of defense. Passwords should be long and complex, with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Consider using a password manager (like 1Password) to help store these securely. This is especially important for any device where your child may store photos! 🗑️ Understand deletion: Deleting a photo isn’t always immediate or permanent. When you delete a picture, it often goes into a “Recently Deleted” folder first. Make it a habit to empty this folder, and regularly review your device’s backup settings. Backups can still hold onto deleted images if you’re not careful. 📱 Manage app permissions: Many apps request access to your photos, and it’s a good idea to review and manage these permissions regularly. Remove access for apps you no longer use, and be cautious with new ones, especially if your child downloads them. Remember, keeping control over who can view or use your photos starts here. Every picture tells part of your family’s story and deserves to be protected. By practicing these safety tips together, you’ll be helping your family build healthy habits that safeguard your memories.

As online activity increases during the holiday season, ensuring children's safety is essential. It's crucial to protect them from online abuse and exploitation, including inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and online predators, while they explore, game, or chat. **Top Safety Tips for Parents:** 1. **Monitor Gaming:** Check game ratings (ESRB.org) and talk to your child about who they play with and what they share online. 2. **Set Online Boundaries:** Establish rules for websites and apps children can visit or download, and ensure devices block unwanted contact. 3. **Use Password Protection:** Secure your child’s phone with a password and control app downloads. 4. **Discuss Privacy:** Teach kids never to share personal info or meet strangers from games or online. 5. **Set Location Limits:** Turn off GPS and location services to protect your child's whereabouts. 6. **Talk About Messaging and Texting:** Have ongoing conversations about the risks of sending explicit content and how to handle inappropriate messages. Have you seen the Nest cam? You can share your video feed with others. Your neighbors can check on your pets while you're at work, or you can check on elderly relatives from anywhere! Sign in to the Nest app with a computer. For some reason, you can’t change the camera’s privacy settings on a phone or tablet. Select the Camera that you want to share > Settings > Camera sharing. You have two options: Share with password or Share publicly. Select Share with password: Click this to let specific people view your camera’s live stream. They’ll need the link to your camera and they’ll need to enter the password you set.
