The report labels 97% of chemicals studied as (very) hazardous, which need to be phased out ASAP. The same result you’d get for any other application or material group, ceramic, metal, biobased. The report is the perfect illustration that polarised green, hazard, precautionary approach does not work, unless your goal is getting back to the stone age (before the invention of fire). The sensible way forward towards a sustainable future is a realistic, well balanced and effective risk based approach!!
⚠ ⚠ A new report by PlastChem finds 16,000 chemicals in #plastics, many of which remain untested & may be toxic to human health. That's 16,000 reasons why we need a strong #PlasticsTreaty for our health, planet, and our communities. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eibR6DcS

The #WorldEBHCDay blog by Minderoo Foundation explores an umbrella review conducted in collaboration with JBI, which uncovers how chemicals found in plastics are affecting our #Planet and increasing the risk of developing a multitude of health harms. "Our umbrella review found that there is consistent and irrefutable evidence that plastic chemicals in every group examined harm human health, across the entire human life cycle. " Read the blog to understand why we should rethink our relationship with #Plastics and advocate for stronger global regulations. 👇 https://ow.ly/ncLu50TMfOa #PlasticHarm

Microplastics are everywhere, even in our bodies. New research reveals their presence in human placentas, arteries, semen, and testes. These discoveries add to growing evidence that plastic pollution poses a significant health risk. The problem: • Global plastic production has doubled since 2000 and is expected to double again by 2040. • Microplastics are accumulating in our environment and bodies, potentially contributing to declining sperm health and other health issues. • The economic burden of plastic-related diseases is staggering, exceeding $675 billion in the U.S. alone for BPA, DEHP, and PBDE exposure. Experts warn we're approaching a tipping point. While the current health effects are concerning, they may be just the beginning. #PlasticPollution #Sustainability #Packaging #MicroPlastics https://lnkd.in/dzVNxdM5

New Minderoo Foundation Umbrella Review spotlights the #plasticscrisis as a #healthcrisis and finds that: ➡ none of the chemical classes of plastic-associated chemicals evaluated in the report can be considered safe (BPA, Phthalates, PCBs, PBDEs, PFAs) ➡ each class of chemicals is linked with adverse human health impacts, including fertility, neurodevelopment, chronic diseases and more ➡ the full range of human health risks associated with plastic-associated chemicals remains unknown. https://bit.ly/3Mcj2kd Amidst broad support of INC Members to develop a #plasticstreaty that will protect human health and the environment from the impacts of #plasticpollution, the body of scientific evidence of the human health impacts of chemicals used in plastics is growing. On the road to #INC5, there is a vital opportunity for Members to address the mounting crisis and converge on a comprehensive approach to protect human health and the environment in the context of sustainable development priorities.
