Years ago, during hurricane Irene, we lost 14 tall oaks after a microburst hit our house. Why so many trees? Because they have a lateral root system that was intertwined, so they went down like dominoes. Tree roots take nourishment from the ground, and when one tree is undernourished they ensure it survives. They are the ultimate team. They work together, grow together, and sometimes fall together. For those trees that survived, I was told that the roots would grow towards each other until they were, once again, intertwined, holding hands for nourishment.
