Animal welfare will not be adequately protected in the EU unless it is managed in a different way from the past. Now is the time to deliver a much needed change: an EU commissioner for animal welfare.

We are disappointed in the Labour Party's first animal welfare policy since coming into power-to legalise the harmful practice of carrying chickens by legs. The evidence is clear that chickens suffer greatly when carried by their legs - enduring high levels of stress. The weakening of regulations would represent a major step backward in the UK's ambition to be a world leader in animal welfare https://lnkd.in/em-xhhHu

🔍 What is the Current State of Animal Welfare Across the EU? 🐾 What more can be done to improve the welfare of livestock maintained for production? In this enlightening discussion, Euractiv hosted three experts to share their insights: - Frank Verdonck from European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), who discussed EFSA's recent work and publications 📝 - Ana Granados Chapatte from EFFAB - European Forum of Farm Animal Breeders, representing animal breeders - Jo Swabe from Humane Society International - Europe, a non-profit organisation aiming for improved animal protection Topics discussed include: the Welfare of Laying Hens (Banning cage use) 🐔 and the Welfare of Pigs (Issues like tail docking) 🐖 It's always intriguing when representatives from diverse organizations come together to voice their opinions. While opinions may differ, the shared goal is clear: improving animal welfare. No one likes to see animals in pain or maltreated. Let's see which parts of EFSA's opinions the European Commission will implement into policy and legislation as part of its Farm to Fork Strategy. 🎧 Listen to the discussion here: https://lnkd.in/dKC9HiBe #AnimalWelfare #EFSA #FarmToFork #Livestock

I’m really enjoying Vet Matters. I often think about this interview on extreme listening (see comments) and how bias, a lack of empathy and not making space for other’s viewpoints can stop us from moving forward. Especially when there’s multiple stakeholders and opinions that are often strongly aligned with their core values. Underneath it all they might be threatened or scared. Growth mindsets are very hard work to maintain at times, but worth it. It gets even worse if people decide they don’t like each other. Enter civility and a (mostly) utilitarian approach, alongside negotiation skills.
