Somalia’s Puntland Refuses to Recognize Federal Government after Disputed Constitutional Changes Somalia's semi-autonomous state of Puntland said on Sunday it has withdrawn from the country's federal system and will govern itself independently until constitutional amendments passed by the central government are approved in a nationwide referendum. The federal parliament in Mogadishu on Saturday approved several constitutional changes that the government says are necessary to establish a stable political system. Critics say the changes, which include introducing direct presidential elections and allowing the president to appoint a prime minister without parliamentary approval, concentrate power in the hands of the executive. The Post-Election Quandary! The general elections in Pakistan were highly anticipated and were held on February 8, 2024. The elections were expected to bring stability to the country, but the results came as a surprise to many. None of the parties have a clear majority to form a government, which has led to concerns about the fairness of the elections. While some have serious concerns that the elections were rigged to deny a clear mandate to a particular party, others believe that the results reflect the true will of the people. The contest to form a government in the center is ongoing, and there are no substantial indications of what kind of government will be formed or who will lead the country. It has been five days since the elections, and uncertainty prevails in the country. The lack of a clear majority has left the country in a state of turmoil, and the political future of the country remains unclear. Nevertheless, it is stumping to see that some are working towards forming a coalition government in the federal. The process of forming a coalition government is complicated and requires the support of several parties. It is also important to note that the coalition government may be unstable, and the parties may have different agendas, which could lead to further instability. The uncertainty has created anxiety among the people, and the current situation is not ideal for the economic and social development of the country. It is now more important than ever for all parties to come together and find a solution that benefits the people and the country as a whole. The people of Pakistan are looking to their leaders to provide stability and progress. It is time for the leaders to take responsibility and steer the country towards a brighter future. #pakistan #post #elections2024 #crisis

Sunday’s local elections were nothing short of a political earthquake for Turkey. They showed that political change is possible even after the decades-long iron grip of Erdoğan over the country. However, there are plenty of reasons for the opposition's optimism to remain cautious. My latest for Kathimerini English Edition.

What happened in 1974? New rules were added to the Canada Elections Act to create our political financing regime, which serves as a model around the world today. In 1974, Parliament created new rules that would help bring fairness and transparency to how federal political entities make and spend money. 💲 By limiting contributions and election expenses, the rules help level the playing field and make sure Canadians can “follow the money.” The rules have evolved over time and should continue to evolve to address the changing election landscape. We all know that political elections in free countries fulfil the minimum requirement of democracy in that a once-elected government can be deposed and replaced with a newly -elected government. This does not guarantee that a government will perform or behave well. It might try and restrict freedoms, but, if it isn't replaceable, it will always try and restrict freedom. As with a free Press, it's harder to act in secret. Such openness might not seem much of an advantage until you reflect what it's absence would be like. Democracy will always be democracy when the winning government/ victorious MP who takes power knows that one day it must be given back. So, following the utterly sham elections in Russia and Iran last week, it rather begs the question as to why these countries ( and many other countries ) bother to hold elections in the first place. It's because deep down the leaders of these countries, as abhorrent and murderous as they are, know that they still have to project the myth that they have been freely elected even though they know very well that they have not. They know that free elections with genuine choices for the voters is the only way democracy can work.

Polls will matter greatly for Sri Lanka’s new leader. On September 24, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced parliament’s dissolution to pave the way for snap parliamentary elections, which he said would take place on November 14. Dissanayake, leader of the leftist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) party, assumed office on September 23, after winning the September 21 presidential election. The JVP-led National People’s Power (NPP) alliance had just three out of 225 seats in the dissolved legislature. What next? 👉 The NPP would struggle to pursue its key policies, such as ending the executive presidency and reducing the austerity associated with the IMF bailout, without a parliamentary majority. 👉 This will be difficult to achieve, but becomes a likelier prospect if former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s United National Party (UNP) and Sajith Premadasa’s Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) fail to unite against the alliance. 👉 Dissanayake’s alliance will almost certainly improve considerably on its seat tally, even if it falls short of a majority. With the Queensland State election scheduled for 26 October, the Queensland Government will enter its caretaker period from tomorrow (1 October). During this time, decision-making, new appointments, and the execution of significant contracts are typically paused. The periods leading up to, and following, elections can be particularly turbulent in the grants world.
