Have you ever noticed that decision-makers aren’t always the best at evaluating new ideas? It’s not just a gut feeling—it’s backed by research. A recent study revealed that while experts are great at recognizing creative, groundbreaking ideas, putting them in decision-making roles often limits their ability to select those same ideas. Why? Decision-makers tend to focus on risks and uncertainties they can’t control, making them more cautious and less likely to choose novel concepts. The takeaway? If you want smarter decisions and more innovation, separate idea screening from final decision-making. Let experts spot the gold, and decision-makers evaluate feasibility without missing out on breakthrough opportunities. It might be time for you to rethink how you approach innovation evaluation—because great ideas shouldn’t get lost in the shuffle. What do you think? Have you seen this play out in your own organization? Let’s talk. #Innovation #Leadership #CreativeThinking #Business #Analytics https://lnkd.in/gBtq5Pr3

New research published on decision making and the selection of new ideas. Not surprised by the importance of expertise, but the impact of the decision making role is very interesting.

For any modern innovator wanting to create new solutions to areas where there is a collective frustration with lack of progress, reading the work of Roger Martin is a must. No wonder he was named world’s #1 management thinker by Thinkers50, a biannual ranking of the most influential global business thinkers. In one of his books - The Opposable Mind - Mr. Martin compares how just as the opposable thumb is a powerful enabler of the human species, the opposable mind is to be cultivated, as breakthroughs happen when we hold two seemingly opposing ideas in our mind to discover the opportunity that is hidden within that polarity. This concept that he calls Integrative Thinking is more powerful than seeking to have one solution win vs another, or blending concepts into a win-win: “Integrative Thinking is the ability to constructively face the tension of opposing models and, instead of choosing one at the expense of the other, generating a creative resolution of the tension in the form of a new model.” Roger Martin is a renowned business strategist, former director of the Monitor Group, the former Dean of the University of Toronto - Rotman School of Management and luckily for us, a prolific author. In his book, he gives examples of how this approach leads to examining never-ending “black vs white” kind of conundrums with new questions that enable us to see a better perspective, more options than just two polarised ones and new solutions. These new ways of approaching old problems to create a breakthrough align closely with our mission and methods at Careteam Technologies to transform healthcare through innovative digital solutions. Martin’s integrative thinking combines well with appreciative Inquiry - the other type of AI that has a massive impact. We embrace a “yes, and” mindset, where we build on existing ideas and solutions, developing them to achieve better results. We see two-sided debates as opportunities to broaden and discover more than what seems initially at stake. We focus on bridging two opposing perspectives, searching for the intersection that leads to genuine breakthroughs. By exploring both sides and finding synergy, we unlock opportunities for innovative solutions that drive meaningful progress. 📊 Are Your Strategic Assumptions Truly Bulletproof? Our recent poll shows that many of you regularly test your assumptions, which is a great start. But even with frequent testing, hidden risks can still lurk beneath the surface. Assumptions based on outdated insights, confirmation bias, or incomplete data can create blind spots in your strategy. Even regular testing won’t fully protect you if those tests aren’t thorough or if key perspectives are overlooked. To mitigate these risks, the next step is to diversify your validation process. Involve diverse teams, continuously update data sources, and regularly challenge even your most trusted assumptions. Want to learn more? Our blog dives deeper into how you can adopt a more robust, assumption-based approach. 👉https://lnkd.in/ek6reVwr #Strategy #Innovation #Leadership #AssumptionBasedStrategy

Looking to shake things up in your approach by introducing something new and innovative? 👇 In "How to Innovate and Stay Relevant in Times of Change and Uncertainty," Dave Birss provides a straightforward approach to innovation that cuts through the clutter: 1️⃣ Strategy is King: Define your innovation goals and let those goals lead every decision. Keep things moving with a single point person to call balls and strikes. 2️⃣ Think Outside the Box: Use a matrix to weigh ideas not just on their face value but their hidden potential. Then go for the golden quadrant with concepts that are both unique and useful. 3️⃣ Fail Fast, Learn Faster: Avoid the "Big Bang" approach. Get your ideas out there, gather feedback and tweak as you go. It's the real-world insights that count, not waiting for perfection. I'll be diving deeper into understanding and applying these insights to increase my ability to spot new opportunities, pivot, challenge the status quo and innovate. Should be fun! 😊 #Innovation #ChangeManagement #BusinessGrowth
