⚠️ Euro NCAP releases 2023 Year in Numbers ⚠️ Today, Euro NCAP releases its annual Year in Numbers, which includes milestones for the organisation as well as some of the themes that emerged in the industry in 2023. The year saw massive and rapid changes, from the new revisions in the safety protocols of Euro NCAP to the addition of trucks and other heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) in the assessment programme. 🚚 "While ratings were fewer in 2023 than they were in 2022, it remained a busy period of innovative breakthroughs in Euro NCAP. We take pride in the new safety protocol updates, projects, and partnerships that emerged from Euro NCAP’s increased dedication to safety. Engineering thought of the day "#ACC vs #AAEBS" I have seen many people getting confused between what ACC does and what #AEBS does and expect features of #ACC to become part of #AEBS . In order to understand the topic in more details , let me first explain what #ACC does Adaptative Cruise control a.k.a. #ACC servers a purpose of maintaining a vehicle speed at desired set point just like standard cruise control , that said it will be capable of reducing the speed of ego should there be a deceleration in vehicle in front to maintain safe distance and relative velocity of zero. It can also reduce the speed of the vehicle below set limit if it is capable enough to seek information on road speed limits . These are some of the which aspects make it adaptive in nature . Please note that #ACC wont provide protection against stationary obstacles on road like parked vehicles , un marked road dividers etc. Automated Emergency Braking System a.k.a. #AEBS on the other hand has no business to do with speed governing , it is only responsible to (make an effort) to avoid impending collision with stationary / rapidly decelerating obstacle in the path of motion of ego . The key trade off in #AEBS design is when to start applying brake and at what rate of deceleration . If the #AEBS applies brakes too late it may result into jerky stopping and may even result into toppling of vehicle if it is loaded truck . If it applies braking too early with low deceleration it may result into irritation to driver . Upcoming standard AIS 162 mentions the emergency braking shall not start earlier than 3 seconds , this does not mean that braking can not start earlier . The way braking strategy is implemented differentiates performance of one supplier from another . EVs achieved their highest monthly share of new registrations so far this year, accounting for 19% of all new vehicle registrations, according to the SMMT. So, it is interesting to note that EVs typically have 20-30% more ADAS features than equivalent ICE vehicles have, and that the right combination of ADAS features could reduce the likelihood of a motor insurance claim by close to a third. The EC will discuss possible solutions in the coming weeks with all stakeholders including type approval authorities which could address some of the problems within the framework of #858Regulation. Security is important but shouldn’t be used as an excuse to restrict competition in the aftermarket. Jan-Willem van der Linden CECRA -BOVAG : the right to repair legislation exists but we need enforcement. There is a need for sector specific legislation (SSL) as not everything can be covered via the adaptation of the 858. Laurianne Krid Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) Region I : ECJ gave clear signals and FiA was hoping such a decision but a step more is needed via a SSL. 100% security doesn’t exist and cars can be hacked. Their objective is to offer all homologation services from a single source. 🚗🔍 In the face of rapidly advancing vehicle technology and constantly changing international regulations, there are advantages in having a single point of contact right from the development phase of a new vehicle generation. The tests required for the type approval are carried out directly at the test grounds – an efficient single-source process thanks to the pooled know-how and resources of ADAC and TÜV SÜD. As the amount and complexity of software-defined vehicles rapidly rise, there is an increasingly urgent need for a barrier-free, safe and secure interface between the industry on the one hand and the approval authorities on the other. Taiwan's VSCC updates Vehicle Safety Testing Standards to align with International Regulations The VSCC (Vehicle Safety Certification Center) has updated its Vehicle Safety Testing Directions (VSTDs) for automotive products. Four new VSTDs have been implemented, covering Light Signaling Devices, Road Illumination Devices, Retro-Reflective Devices, and Blind Spot Information Systems. These correspond to VSTD 91 to 94 and are equivalent to UNR 148 to UNR 151. Additionally, VSTD 56-3 concerning Electromagnetic Compatibility has been amended to 56-4, and VSTD 80 regarding Quiet Road Transport Vehicles has been updated to 80-1. Automotive products usually require VSCC Certification in order to be approved for import and sale in Taiwan. These changes reflect the VSCC’s commitment to aligning with international standards and ensuring the safety and compatibility of automotive products in Taiwan. The amendments aim to enhance vehicle safety features and bring Taiwan’s regulations in line with United Nations Regulations (UNR). The Vehicle Safety and Certification Center (VSCC) is responsible for vehicles and products in the automotive industry in Taiwan. The authority was established in 2009 by the Ministry of Transport and Communications in the Taiwanese city of Lugang. This week, representatives of ETRTO and the European Commission Joint Research Center (JRC) participated in a 2-day workshop on #tyre abrasion at DEKRA France test center. They saw the methodology approved by the UNECE Working Party on Noise and Tyres in action, including: 🛞 Test vehicle preparation to mitigate impact on the test 🛞 Tyre fitting & balancing 🛞 Measuring the tread depth & profile of the tyres by laser 🛞 Open road testing in a real-life situation More testing will be conducted in the upcoming months to determine tyre abrasion limits for passenger car tyres (C1 tyres) to be incorporated in UN Regulation No. 117 by September 2025.
