📣 New Course Alert!!! ➡ Join us on July 9th for the first of our "90-minute Summer Skill Series" trainings: PFAS SRS-MGW: Insights and Attainment Approaches. 🟢 This presentation will discuss the interim remediation standards for per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in soil for the migration to groundwater pathway (SRS-MGW). The New Jersey approach to regulating PFAS in soil for the protection of groundwater will be compared to that taken by other regulatory jurisdictions. Retention and leaching of PFAS in soil are affected by several factors, including release characteristics, unique sorption mechanisms (e.g., interfacial sorption), soil characteristics, and a cyclic process of desorption, leaching, and resorption. The basis for the SRS-MGW will be compared to the recent body of knowledge relating to PFAS sequestration in soil. Case examples will be provided of soil sequestration and leaching along with a demonstration of the NJDEP PFAS SPLP calculator. The roundtable will culminate with a novel attainment demonstration approach for sequestering PFAS with sorptive amendments, including 1) an overview of commercially available and emerging amendments; 2) means, methods, and considerations for field application; and 3) sustainability considerations. Looking forward to discussing this important topic: PFAS soil protection of groundwater standards, including remediation options and attainment approaches. PFAS need not be a perpetual science project in pursuit of the ideal remedy. Practical and sustainable solutions exist for source mitigation, especially as disposal option become limited. These are based on more than a decade of published F&T research and a growing body of research on PFAS sequestration and vadose zone retention mechanisms. Aligning regulatory frameworks with these approaches is important for attainment demonstration and a path forward.

Citizens have the right to information on substances in their environment. However, providing this information is easier said than done. Especially when you consider how many substances we use in our society (some estimate up to 350.000!), and that these end up as complex mixtures in the environment. I am proud to present our paper (my first paper as first author!) in which we discuss this problem: How are citizens currently being informed on chemical mixtures in their local environment? How do we indicate the impacts of these mixtures on human and ecological health? And how can this be improved? My thanks to my co-authors and everyone who has read and reviewed our article!
