Another public outcry on food safety and the impact of antimicrobial resistance. Scientists, veterinarians and those in agricultural industries are generally fully aware and supportive of the need for prudent use of antimicrobials to protect animals and birds in their charge from illness and disease transmission. I am still surprised at how little the public community understands AMR. And it’s not an easy message to convey. Against the science is social media messaging such as the myths that certain breeds contribute to AMR. Or that organic or heritage breeds equates to safe and healthy food. Safe food is dependant on many interacting factors, which is why a holistic AMR Stewardship program with audits and industry benchmarking programs are necessary. Only then can farmers, retailers and industry bodies report proactively on food safety. AMR is underfunded and under-communicated. It’s a sleeping giant.

Two African laboratories—Zimbabwe’s Central Veterinary Laboratory and Uganda’s Directorate of Government Analytical Laboratories—have attained accreditation to the international standard for testing and calibration in laboratories with the support of the IAEA and FAO. These accreditations are instrumental in enhancing food safety in the region. Food business operators in Zimbabwe and Uganda can now rely on these local laboratories to test poultry, fruits, vegetables and other food products for any chemical hazards rather than having to send samples out of the country for testing. This reduces costs and minimizes the risk of spreading transboundary diseases. 【NEWS UPDATE】Exciting news for the animal feed industry! 🐓🐦 The European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) FEEDAP research group has evaluated a feed additive made from soap tree and yucca extract. 📊 Their scientific opinion concludes that this additive is safe for broiler chickens when used at up to 250 mg/kg, and may be applicable to other poultry and ornamental birds as well. 👍 However, more data is still needed to fully assess its efficacy across all species. 🔍 This lays the groundwork for further regulation and use of this innovative feed additive in the EU market. 🇪🇺 #AnimalFeed #FeedAdditive #FoodSafety #EFSA #FEEDAP https://lnkd.in/gBjqV9FP
