Eurogroup for Animals’ Post

Last week, I was honoured to visit the last meeting of the Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals before the #EUelections2024. I took the liberty to thank MEPs who were actively working in this intergroup to put animal welfare issues on the agenda of the European Parliament and the European Commission. They accomplished many things during the 2019-2024 term. For example: ✅ The set-up of a Committee of Inquiry on the Protection of Animals during Transport (ANIT), which pushed for the revision of the outdated Regulation on animal transport. ✅ The resolution on actions to accelerate a transition to non-animal science. ✅ Its working group on the ECI End the Cage Age contributed to getting a resolution and commitments by the European Commission. ✅ The resolution on improving Regulations on wild and exotic animals to be kept as pets in the EU through a positive list. ✅ The support for a campaign calling for an EU commissioner on animal welfare. ✅ A very active working group on companion animals. I also reminded MEPs that ifaw is giving all the candidates a chance to pledge their support for key directives, fully implementing biodiversity strategies, combatting wildlife trafficking, and showing leadership on global environmental agreements. At present, there is a loophole in EU legislation that still allows nationally protected wild animal species, which have been trafficked into international trade flows, to be sold legally in Europe as exotic pets. 🛑 BREAKING NEWS 🛑 The European citizens are still strongly opposing seal products on the EU market ❗ ❕ ❗ 🎉 In a new survey conducted in 13 Member States, a staggering 80% of respondents said they support the EU ban on the trade of seal products derived from commercial hunting, and 68% said it should not be weakened in any way. 80% also agree that the legislation remains essential to protect the ethical concerns of EU citizens and animal welfare. ✍ Now is the perfect time to let the European Commission know not to touch the current EU legislation protecting seals and our values. 📣 🐟 Joint Announcement: Ethical Seafood Research & AU-IBAR Launch Factsheet on Aquatic Animal Welfare in Africa The factsheet on Aquatic Animal Welfare in Africa embodies the collective perspective of the African Union - Inter African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) and Ethical Seafood Research (ESR) regarding the welfare of aquatic animals. Drawing insights from key AU-IBAR guiding documents on aquatic animals, including the Policy Framework and Reform Strategy and the Animal Welfare Strategy, this factsheet encompasses all facets of aquatic animal welfare in Africa, with a primary focus on capture fisheries and aquaculture. Both institutions acknowledge the significant welfare challenges facing aquatic animals involved in the 'ornamental' trade. Massive Achievements in Animal Welfare: A Landmark Victory for the Ban on Live Exports 🌍 Exciting news from the UK and Australia! I am thrilled to share groundbreaking news concerning live animal exports from both the UK and Australia. The UK Parliament has just passed a monumental ban on live exports, sparing millions of animals unnecessary suffering. Since the 1990s, I have been deeply involved in investigating the live export trade, traveling thousands of miles to document the distress, suffering, and deaths animals endure during these horrendously long journeys. This trade is not only archaic but utterly unnecessary. 🎥 Over two decades ago, an Animal Planet documentary highlighted my efforts, bringing much-needed attention to this critical issue. Tracks Investigations has spent many years documenting this horrific trade from Australia to the Middle East, and it’s heartening to see our hard work contribute to such a significant change. 👏 This news is a testament to the crucial role that investigative work plays in bringing the plight of animals to the forefront of public and political consciousness. Last December, the European Commission announced the changes it wants to make to update its #TransportRegulation: the legislation which most affects the welfare of countless animals in the #LiveAnimalTransport sector. The proposal seriously lacks in ambition, and continues to fail millions of animals who are left to suffer unnecessarily on long and arduous transport journeys each year. The EU needs a Transport Regulation that truly puts #AnimalWelfare first! Critically, this legislation must include a ban on live exports, as it's incredibly difficult to monitor what happens to animals once they leave the EU's borders. Just recently, the UK has officially banned this practice - it's imperative the EU follows suit. We call on newly-elected MEPs after June's #EUElections2024 to prioritise drafting a stronger Transport Regulation!
