We know that most people want farmers to adopt farming practices that preserve and enhance the environment and nature - and we know how we can make this happen. This week on our YLBG Lenten series, we focus on the significant land use implications of cattle farming, particularly beef and dairy production, which have ten times the environmental footprint of other animal proteins. This spotlight is crucial as our SNDdeN community is acutely aware of the devastation wrought by cattle ranching in the Amazon—leading to deforestation and violence against those who oppose it. It has been exactly one year since our joint report with Compassion in World Farming 'Uncovering the Horrific Reality of Octopus Farming' was published in the mainstream media, including the BBC. What has happened since? Plans to open the world's first #octopusfarm are still underway in Spain, and unfortunately other countries want to follow suit. Despite numerous protests, general public dissent and scientific evidence of the risks associated with farming octopuses, the European Commission has yet to #banoctopusfarming. Octopus farming is a recipe for disaster. Not only would it harm these intelligent animals, it would also threaten marine #ecosystems and fuel #foodinequity. Our Octopus Project Consultant, Keri Tietge, explains why in this video. We are working hard to ensure that the world's first octopus farm does not see the light of day.
