Our analysis of the newly elected European Parliament is finally complete. Positively, one in ten candidates who signed the #VoteforAnimals pledge, committing to doing better for animals, were elected. This means that 102 MEPs are publicly committed to #animalwelfare. Above all, these MEPs belong to different groups in the European Parliament, proving once again that animal welfare is not a left- or right-wing issue, but rather an issue that affects all parties of the political spectrum. This is very positive for us, animal advocates, because it opens more doors and thus more opportunities to create change for animals in the EU.

Why are the #EUelections2024 so important for #animalwelfare? We asked some of the MEPs who signed the #VoteforAniamls pledge to explain the EU's crucial role in improving legislation for animals. The European elections are only two weeks away. So far over 700 candidates have pledged to do better for animals, but many more have yet to do so. Specifically, we need the lead candidates in each group to take the pledge, as they are the ones with the highest likelihood to be elected. Help us contact them and let them know that when you cast your vote in June, you will make their commitment to animal welfare a priority. Send a message to candidates asking them to take the pledge, committing to 10 demands for higher welfare standards in Europe: https://lnkd.in/d7G5izer

Tasmanian politics update: PREMIER ISSUES ULTIMATUM TO TUCKER AND ALEXANDER Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff has threatened an early election unless independents John Tucker and Lara Alexander sign a new agreement that provides certainty to the Government and Tasmanians. Mr Rockliff’s ultimatum follows Mr Tucker last month threatening to bring the Government down if he didn’t get his way on animal welfare, and on a new High Performance Centre for the future Tasmanian AFL team. “Mr Tucker and Mrs Alexander are not honouring the intent of the agreement, instead they have continued to shift the goalposts, and threatened to withdraw confidence and supply unless they get their own way,” the Premier said. “As a result, the Parliament is becoming unworkable. This cannot go on. I will not allow the Government or Tasmanians to be held to ransom. “Tasmanians deserve certainty, and that’s why I have written to Mr Tucker and Mrs Alexander proposing a new agreement.” The Premier said he did not want to go to an early election if it can be avoided, he wants a new agreement and certainty for Tasmanians. Mr Tucker and Mrs Alexander are scheduled to meet with the Premier to discuss the proposed new agreement next Friday, February 9.

Did you know there is a way for European citizens to directly participate in the EU’s legislative process? This process is called ‘participatory democracy’, and it’s meant to make citizens’ concerns a driving force for change. But how does it work? Political scientist and Director of The ECI Campaign Carsten Berg explains this concept in detail. 📹 As this Sunday will be #InternationalDayofDemocracy, we will be taking this week to talk more in depth about EU democracy, citizen participation and animal welfare.

A country may have robust welfare laws to protect animals raised for food domestically, but do those laws hold meaning if the same country imports large volumes of animal products from countries with no such protections? Animal Policy International are working hard to address this very issue, and in our new episode in the APC Policy Clinic series, we talked to their Co-Executive Director Rainer Kravets to take a deep dive on the topic.
